i have a 2 yr old chi and have had her since she was a little baby, i tried the puppy pads and the litter box but neither worked. The thing that worked for me was setting specific meal times and picking up her food after that, then taking her out about 5 min after she eats to let her food digest, when you are taking her out be sure to say something like "outside" or "potty" so she will associate those words with going to the restroom, and eventually you can just ask her when she needs to go. while outside watch her to make sure that she does go potty. But of course they arent perfect and accidents will happen, just be sure to teach her where the door is so eventually she can wait there for you so you'll know she wants to go outside.

I've found with my dog, that crate training her has worked really well. Seems dogs don't like soiling where they sleep. I take her out at night before bedtime, and then again first thing in the morning. When I notice she's eating, or drinking we normally head out about 15-20 minutes after to elimate. She does really good, and she has had very few accidents since we started the crate training.
I've heard a lot of people say that the liter boxes are good too!! I would just make sure to "PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE" when she goes where you want her too. If you catch her in the act of going inside then in a firm voice tell her "NO", and then take her right away where you want her to go.. either outside, or a liter box! I would decide on one or the other though, so she doesn't get confused. If she gets confused then she's not going to be sure where she needs to go.
I know at pet smart they have these training "CLICKERS", and the sound is connected to a "PRAISE", and I have heard they work really well! Also, treats work well too!! Good Luck!

My pup (she's almost 2) goes outside and uses a litter box with a puppy pad. You need to find the spots where she has peed and clean them up with an enzym cleaner that will get rid of the urine so she can not smell it. If she can smell it some place - she will think it is okay to pee there. My pup is now very good about using her litter box. Find a spot where she seems to like to pee and keep puppy pads all over that spot. She will go to it - then she will figure out that that is her peepee spot. That is what we did. She loves to pee outside to - she is very territorial!:)

these small dogs are hard to train. the best way I know of is to use a puppy crate(pet taxi)
put the puppy in when it is asleep and take it outside as soon as it wakes or as you are able to get back home to it. most dogs will not go to the bathroom in their own bed. the crate
needs to be just enough room to sleep so if it is a chihuahua, you will need a very small one, I put mine in after they are asleep just like you would put a baby in a crib after they are asleep if I am at home I leave the door open this way the puppy doesn't develop a fear of the bed.
and always being locked in it. but be sure to praise her when she does go outside scold her when she goes in the house and then take her outside as quickly as you can

when my little dog was a puppy i put a puppy pad in the bathroom and he would follow me to the bathroom every time i went. he associated the bathroom as the place to go and started going on his own. since your dog is still a puppy i think you can train her this way. remember if she has accidents this is to be expected.but every time she does forget, place her on the pad and remind her thats where shes shes to pee or poo. goodluck

THEY DO HAVE LITTER BOXES FOR SMALL DOGS AT PET CO AND PET SMART. MY MOM USES IT EFFECTIVELY FOR HER CHI AND HER PUG. I THINK IT HAS SOMETHING ON IT THAT MAKES THE PUP WANT TO USE IT. ALSO I RECOMEND TAKING TO HER BOX FIRST THING IN THE ORNING AND KEEPING HER THERE UNTIL SHE GOES AND AS SOON AS SHE DOES PRAISING THE HELL OUT OF HER. GOOD LUCK!
