Sorry, but the only way to know for sure if there is something more permanent, is if the problems persist when the home stressors cease. However, suff like depression can come on during stress and go away as the stressor is removed. And stress can actually trigger the onset of mental illnessthat wasn't present before the events that triggered them, as in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Many mental illnesses can have both biological and psychological causes. Oftentimes trauma, stress, and other things caused by either bad habits or a stressful environment actually change us physiologically.

There's a chance that your friend could recover and not have to live on medicine for the rest of her life, if she got out of that environment. On the other hand, she may have a mental illness too. It's hard to tell the causes sometimes.

In my experience, leaving a bad home life varies wildly in its effects. Most of the people that I know had so many habits and tendencies when they left, that they haven't really recovered from it (at least at this point; it's only been about 5 years for most of them). Others have shaken it off and become very happy and successful people.

Well, doctors tend to treat the symptoms of illness, not the causes. It is often difficult to know if symptoms are related to the home environment, and even if they are, they still need to be treated. Your friend may need the help of medication to get her through her crises and may be able to get off of meds once her home situation improves.

usually when you are under extreme stress you are suffering from a mental illness. i'm guessing when she goes to the doctor she tells them about her homelife and that she's on the meds because of this.
