No, it is not suicidal when practised in religious manner. Otherwise also judicious fasting tends to extend life span of the ppl. Fasting is not synonym for starvation.

Yes, very sadly, it is true, or has been for past generations who died too early.

Control is one thing; on the other hand, does it really show self-restraint? If only so many of a group can survive a bad situation, it's considered to be one way of helping the younger members of your family or group to survive it.

Or if terminal pain is ignored, for example, and the only socially acceptable form of euthanasia is to starve yourself to the usual death.

Also, if it is considered culturally wrong & destructive to speak about emotions, the demonstrable fact of an individual wasting away is clear evidence of sincerity, and often this is taken to be a spiritual thing rather than a lack of appreciation.

Sometimes, a wife or husband will say they are "over it all" and then take up heavy drug use. In which case, there is no point in addressing the habit, when their grief is the primary cause.

BTW, there was also an ancient Irish tradition of protest - if someone in power performed an outrageously unjust act, you could condemn this by speaking out against it. If this didn't move them, the ultimate punishment was to starve yourself in their company. Something to do with wordlessly refusing their hospitality - which was quite a barbaric insult in a literate and articulate society. The insult would have had to to be pretty deep to make you silent and deny your normal needs.

I don't agree that it's a good thing - it's not. It's always a result of bullying, and the real answer is to get through it alive!

I have no doubt that there is some religion out there in which it is permitted.

but I don't think in an abrahamic religion (religions that belive, or claim to belive in the god of abraham, the main 3 being Judaism, christianity and Islam) can have such an allowance.
