"Lee" is NOT an Asian surname. In English, "lee" means the downwind side of something. This is a common naval term and was used on land for the side of the mountain that was opposite the usual wind direction. It is from Proto-Germanic *hlew- 'protection, shelter'. There is nothing whatsoever Asian about it. Compare in the Caribbean, the two parallel chains of islands--the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands. It is strictly a coincidence that "Li" is a common Asian name.

Just as you said it....the west homed many chinese, due to the goldrush and things like building the railroad. In china, America was light to them, hope, so many came. But back then, chinese were treated like verman, they were less, even than the blacks. A lot of the females were subjected to substitute sex for money. that is how the west got lee.

good question I know a Caucasian called Lee...he is of British background...I tend to think it is an abbreviation maybe of LeMoore or something like that,a branch off a large family

not all lee is from asian extraction...it also has an english meaning
