There are many high quality dog foods available these days..I used to feed Nutro Chicken/Rice...My pups grew great, and, as my breed is long-coated, they had gorgeous coats in no time...
However, their teeth were always stained..I never knew why, but they seemed to need constant cleaning, to be ready to show..
So, I switched to Eukenuba, and they had better teeth, and nice coats..but bowels were always loose...
I fed Abady's for 2 litters, and liked what it did for the pups..but it stank..and was too un-handy....
I fed Purina Pro Plan when it came out..Pups did well..no complaints...
However, my supplier recommended Canidae 21/2 years ago..WOW! I never knew that my oldsters could be so rejuvenated! Suddenly they were putting on gorgeous coats, and acting as puppies..full of play..dancing as we walked...It just blew me away...
Then I took a 10 year old to have a cyst removed, and the vet came out amazed at her blood-work..he said that it was that expected in a 4-5 year old...He also said that he always cleans teeth while they are 'under', but that her teeth were absolutely clean..
I took another in to be spayed, at 7 years old, and the vet was amazed at how white and clean her teeth were..and then when he took out stitches..commented that she healed so fast that the incision was already hard to see...
All my dogs have just thrived on Canidae, and I would sure recommend it..It is made from all human grade ingredients, and natural preservatives..
there are other foods that are likely as good..but, as Canidae is easy to find, and they are doing so well, I wouldn't want to switch..
Other great dog foods that you can find most places, are Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, Wysong, Natural Balance, Royal Canine...

Are you just interested in commercial foods or home made? Or both?
When it comes to commercial foods, any premium food is a good choice, although some are better than others. I personally prefer brands such as Nutro Ultra, Purina Pro-Plan Selects, and Nature's Recipe. These foods do not contain animal by-product nor fillers such a s ground yellow corn. I also prefer these brands because they are very available for consumers to purchase at most pet retailers.
Other brands that claim to be even better can be difficult to find and that one day you run out and the store is closed or you're on vacation or the store you purchase from ran out, you have no where else to go. Feeding another brand can cause upset tummies and even diarrhea.
Start reading the ingredients on the bag. You'll learn a lot about what's in it. Stay away from yellow/whole corn, by-products and artificial preservatives. The first ingredient should always be a protein source unless your dog needs a special low-protein diet.

First of all, don't give dogs raw eggs. They can contain bacteria that can be toxic. Only cooked , plain eggs with no seasoning, oils or butter. Your dog might not be eating hard food because she has problems with her teeth. The first thing you should do is get her teeth taken care of by the vet because the bacteria from gum disease and tooth decay can get into a dog's system and cause problems with internal organs. Once her teeth feel better, she will probably be more open to a healthier diet. People food all the time isn't meeting her nutrition needs. Please have her teeth taken care of. It might kill her eventually if you don't. Then you can discuss a good, non-expensive food with your vet. Soft foods encourage tooth decay in dogs.

Most people don't know that the terms referring to meat industry by-products can mean poultry feather meal, connective tissues, leather meal, fecal waste from poultry and other animals, and horse and cattle hair. These ingredients are used in dog food.
Fats might come from wholesale ingredients or from rancid animal fats that have been condemned for humans. Fiber content can be from sources like peanut hulls, hair or newspaper.
In all but 2 or 3 states the law allows pet food makers to use tissues from animals that are dead, dying, diseased or disabled. Other ingredients include moldy grain or rancid animal fat. Feeding slaughterhouse wastes to animals increase their chances of getting cancer or other diseases. It also contains high doses of hormones also linked to cause cancer in lab rats. In 1978 this lady worked in a butchering factory. The daily output was 100,000 chickens. The damaged and diseased parts were cut off for the pet food manufactures. It is absolutely horrible what our government lets pet food manufactures get away with. Shame on the government and shame on the pet food manufactures. The more expensive dog foods (iams, science diet, etc.) are better than purina, old roy, alpo and numerous others.

i can only speak for the ones I've used. the very best is nutro's natural choice with linatone for amazing skin and shiny coat and no more off season shedding. and i can tell you all the claims are true! my 4 great danes are in great shape. just dont feed protein over 24% to large and giant breeds to keep them safe from bone disorders.just dont buy "chicken by products" some foods list b/c that means : beaks, feathers, feet and guts . i think that is what is causing so many skin problems and hair loss. from "hot spots" to full body rash and thinning hair.

I feed my Chihuahua's Nutro Ultra, Purina Pro-Plan, and Nature's Recipe. I mix them all together in a large air tight container that way they get a variety. It is best to feed your dog good food but if you are tight on money and have to go to the store for food Purina would be the best choice.

I have used both science diet and Iams. Our animals like the Iams the best. Read the bags to find what best suits your dogs. Big bites, rice, veggie etc.... If you ask your vet for a few samples you can introduce it a little at a time so they do not get the runs.
