Benadryl is great for this. I'd also recommend hot tea, hot showers, and saline nasal solutions. All are non-prescription and fairly safe. The saline nasal solutions are great stuff. Non-habit-forming, don't destroy tissue, and they keep everything moist up there too so that iyou don't dry out completely when you clear up.

My inclination is to think the allery is an escape clause for an unknown aetilogy (cause).
I think there may be a virus going around all this summer ???Bacteria is less often than suspected. Do not rule out direct irritation by noxious agents (e.g. oil seed rape in season).
However, with the latest nasal congestion, it does seem to increase when it is windy, suggesting an allergy or noxious agent.
Best to avoid alcohol and smoking anything. If you can stand the side-effects, DO-DO tablets contain something called theophylline which keeps you awake, can make you hyper in an unpleasant way, but relieves the symptoms. The rebound effect is not nearly as bad as they make out. Ephedrine would probably work, but this is prescription only and nasal drops are no more effective than the other legal stuff you can sniff.
It has just woken me up. My nose is blocked up and it runs down my throat and wakes me up. If I drink a lot of alcohol this does not happen.I don't wake up.

There are two road to help recovery: one is to get some stuff over the counter to get rid of the congestion - go with Pharmaceutical or "Natural" Vicks Vapour is still MAGIC! As is eucalyptus (used to clear nasal passages, etc, and you can put drops on pillow and so on)
(Naturopaths serve up some wonderful Herbal Drops as aides to allergies too)
The other road is to check your diet: knock out the junk-type foods; and take daily plain yogurt: it's wonderful for bringing back the immune levels via fixing the bacteria (the right sort!) in the gut/intestines.
Take a GOOD B complex daily (at least 50 mg of each of the B group Vits) and Vitamin C is absolutely wonderful, and a `must'
Good luck sorting this out!

Find out what the allergen is, and avoid it. Consider, with your doctor, the value of antihistamine treatment to reduce your body's allergic responses, and treat the symptom, (ie the congestion,) with steam inhalation. Make sue you stay well-hydrated - increase the amount of water you drink.

I have the same thing and it drives me bonkers.
I have tried Beconase Nasal spray but it only works
for a while.
The best thing I have found is "Zirtek" a one a day anti-histamine
tablet. They make you feel sleepy for a couple of days but you
soon get used to them. They seem to be very safe to take
and they work!

Germs enter your body through the eyes, nose and mouth, and from there, make thier way to the gut. Your gut does contain antibodies, but often in insufficient quantity. Once the germ is in the gut, it attaches itself to the lining where it can multiply and cause illness.
