Australia is often called, "Aussie" (pronounced Ozzie as in Ozzie Osbourne) for short. This was in turn shortened to Aus, which became Oz.
Down under is due to it being down in the southern hemisphere. From the perspective of those in Europe, it was geographically down under.
Although I've heard many Americans mispronounce it as "Ossie"
The correct way is with the "Z" sound.

Australia shortened is AUS - pronounced OZ
"Down under" is relative to the rest of the world - look at where we are on a map!
Down the bottom under every other land mass.

The first maps of the world were drawn up by people living in the northern hemisphere, and human nature being what it is, they decided that north was up. So therefore Australia is down. Oz is just short for Australia. (Oz-tralia.)

Very stressful whilst human beings pronouncse Aussie "ossy", its meant to sound like OZZY.. ahh fairly annoys me

AUSSIE (not oz)... (oz is a wizard you find if you follow a yellow brick road)

down under or outback...because it's far away and way down there.
