ISO is an adjustment to simulate the sensitivity ratings of film. In film a higher ISO "speed" meant more sensitivity to light, so you could shoot with lower light or a faster shutter.

In digicams, setting to a higher ISO amplifies the output of the sensor. So it seems like the sensor is more sensitive to light. So you can shoot with lower light or faster shutter, just like in a film camera.

However, since the sensor really can't get any more sensitive, many digicams introduce digital "noise" into a pic taken at high ISO. This looks like little dots in your pic.

Experiment with your Sonys to see how well they work at high ISO. Digicams have been improving in high ISO performance.

Metering is the technique being used to measure light and set exposure in your cameras. Sony's usually allow three different Metering Modes:

Multi-pattern Mode reads the light levels across the whole image, and sets an average of all readings for the exposure.

Center-weighted Mode reads the light only in a rectangle in the middle of the image, and sets the exposure from that.

Spot Metering Mode reads only a small spot at the center of the image to set exposure.

The results you get vary with the metering mode you use. Each mode has types of images where it works better or worse. For example, Multi-pattern often works well with group pics, where you want everyone to show well. But Center or Spot would be better with a single face in the shadows outside.

You need to take lots of practice pics (and remember your settings), so you get good at choosing which settings to use in different circumstances.

Good Luck

Well you only mention two items here.. iso is like film speed... it is just the digital expression of how sensitive the sensor can be to the light. (photography is painting with light.) The metering options.. there are different ways to meter the amount of light in a scene. Since we are talking point and shoot cameras here, I am thinking you are refering to the way the camera meters the light. Usually there are settings to measure light from the center of the frame, take a sample of light from different parts of the frame, or ones that will favor the shadows or highlights. These are useful in different settings as you might want to favor the shadows so that you get enough detail in a face that happens to be in the shade.

The best way to learn is to read books etc on the subject.
Also, the internet has endless tutorials on photography and its techniques, as well has basic camera functions.
Here's a few to get you started...
