The person at the end of a military patrol is called the rear guard. His job is to make sure that the patrol is not being tracked or followed. In the center of the patrol certain members are given the responsibility of being air-guards their responsibility is to watch out fro any aircraft or snipers in trees.

The point is the patrol member assigned to scout ahead of the main body. His job is to be on the lookout for the enemy, fortifications, & obstacles, reporting all observed to the patrol leader.

The sweep is the man assigned to bring up the rear. His job is to guard against attack from the rear, and to report to the patrol leader any patrol members who have fallen out of formation.
