Any squirrels, chipmunks, or birds living up in there? If he remembers chasing one up that tree, then he may still believe there will be one there to chase each time he goes out.

No, but seriously: its probably the scent of the crabapple or perhaps some inscects on the crabapples that would be invisible to you or I. Dogs have super senses and can smell/hear alot humans cant.

Perhaps there are animals living in the tree that make noise, which is probably what he has a beef with. Although, I knew a dog once who liked to chase shadows, and another who doesn't like stcks laying on the ground...
