We're buying a house and will be moving in around the 1st of November. There's a fenced in yard but I don't think it would be enough for a large dog. Besides, I would want it to be a house dog. We have a 2yr old, a 3yr old and two cats. Considering all of this, which may be the ideal dog?

I am a Giant breed dog person however..... considering your situation with very young children and cats.............. I would suggest a Welsh Corgi. They have the temperament similar to a retriever but are small dogs yet stocky so they tolerate child's play well.

Look up the Welsh Corgi and read more about them before making a decision.

As I said.... I love my Newfs and Danes..... but in my opinion.... the Corgi is a friendly, playful, tolerant dog.

Hope I helped and Good Luck!

I would recommend a medium sized dog, not too small and not large. 2 and 3-year-olds will be likely to pull on tails and ears that would really just make the dog mean towards the kids. Unless you have perfect little angels that know better. ^.^ You need a very tolerant dog for young kids and if you get pretty much any breed during the young years of puppy hood all breeds can get a long with cats. Small dogs can have many problems as they get older and with little ones you would want your dog to be around for a long while to be their companion. Talk to a local shelter to ask them about their dogs temperament because even a calm breed can have an odd dog here and there. The shelter should be able to tell you if the dog is used to cats or if it's young enough to get used to them. Happy Searching, ^.^

A pug, they have great temperment with other animals and are very well known for being great with children of all ages and are very sociable dogs. They tend to be watch dogs , not to be confused with uard dogs. They are small-medium sized dog around 12 inches tall and 12-18 pounds. They also have a medium coat which sheds lightly all year round, they do not have an undercoat so there is no heavy shedding. Pugs are easy to train and very loveable, and can even be known as lap dogs. Chinese thought of pugs as a wealthy person's best friend, they are highly respectable dogs with great personality! They are also full of energy in the first couple of years which will keep your kids busy!

Well i have a maltese and a pug and they are such good dogs, they don't need a lot of space to run around in and they are very much couch potatoes, i also have a 5 year old and both my dogs are great with kids, very friendly and don't bite too. The maltese is a little more hyperactive then my pug as pugs are very lazy dogs and only want to sit on your lap and sleep, so depends on the personality you are looking for another good dog is a cocker spaniel X toy poodle (think they are referred to as Spoodles), they are great with kids.

I'd highly recommend a Boston Terrier. They are a small to medium size dog weighing anywhere from 10 to 25lbs. They are as friendly and cuddly as they come. They do not shed, and do not have long hair which will save you $$$ from the groomers. They're highly intelligent, and learn quickly. Most importanly they're great with all people, young and old! I had one and she was sooo good around my friends small children! And they usually get along very well with other animals too!

I can't tell you what type of dog to get for your family, but I "can" tell you about my dog. She is a female Labrador,&
she's not "that" big, because male lab's get bigger than females. Labradors are very family oriented, gentle, and
protective "of" your family. My Lab is an "inside-outside
dog. Lab's are very smart, easy to train, and they are sooo much fun! As with any dog you have to be persistant when you train them. My labrador was potty trained within 3 months after I brought her home. "Now",
she brings me my shoe when she wants to go potty. So I
ask her, hey, where's my other shoe? And believe it or not, she brings me the match! She also knows the difference between my shoes & my slippers! Okay, well
good luck, just thought I would tell you about labs. Personally? With little kids at home, I wouldn't recommend
a small dog, because they are more high strung, and more apt to bite. Good luck

We had out Boston Terrier for 17 yrs, he was a great family dog. He found "his people" everytime he was around kids. He loved kids of all ages. He was a good watch dog, because of his looks (smashed nose) people that did not know him were afraid of him. He was small and compact, he weighed about 20 lbs, and he was only about 10 inches tall and 16 inches long.

I would recommend going to your local shelter and picking a dog that is at least 4 years old or older. You should be able to find a dog that is already trained which should help you since you have two little ones. Any older dog will be more layed back and it will already be fully grown.

A small terrier. We have a silky terrier, and he loves cats, plays well with my 2-yr old son, and has energy when you want to play and is cuddly when you don't. Plus, he worships the ground we walk on and is very eager to please, but also has plenty of independence. We've had Hoover since before we had the baby, and adapted very well. Can't say that about too many breeds.
