I like Mel's answer. They are not dickheads. It takes a lot ouf of a person to be a police officer. Even when my husband is off duty he really isn't off duty. He has to always be aware of who is around us because of some of the poeple he has had to arrest who want to get back at him. Now we are talking criminals here who need to be in prison because of the things they have done to other people in society.
My question to you is this. How have you treated the officer who stopped you? Just like other people they have bad days too but they work are being fair to people when they stop them. Sometimes they do have to be hard so they can protect the innocent law abiding people of our community. Sometimes if a person is trying to act tough infront of their friends then the officer have to get tough to get that person's attention and get them to drop the tude.
Besides you are talking about people who put their lives on the line everytime they walk out their front door esp in their uniform. Some people aka the criminal element seem to think that a uniform and a badge means it is open season on officers.
If you think officers are dickheads then try to walk a mile in my husband's shoes. See what he and his friends see on a daily bases. He sees the best and the worst of people. And the worst things people can do to each other.
I know I only hear a portion of his day. Sometimes he just can't talk about what he has seen.
Officers have a high divorce rate for lots of reasons. Including not being able to communicate easily to someone who does not wear a uniform. Many spouses can't deal with the worry that comes with being married to an officer.
With the way society is today there may come a day when I get a knock on the door. It will be his superior officer, the chaplain, and one of his partners telling me he wont come home ever again. It is hard to have him walk out the door to go to work but what he does is so very important that I keep my mouth shut about it. The last thing I make sure I tell him before he leaves for a shitt is to be careful and be safe and that I love him. No matter how rushed he is to get going I make sure he stops to give me a quick kiss. Just in case.
I love my man and am very very proud of the job he does. He has lots of fine friends on the force. God bless and protect our people in uniform here and over seas.

Since Sept. 11 cops have been increasingly militarized and militant. It's been drilled into their heads that every interaction with the public could turn violent at any second, that anyone on the street could be the next 9/11 terrorist. These days they are trigger happy and empowered by hero worshiping media. The more power, both official and unofficial, you give to a group of people, the more there are members of that group who will abuse it.

don't be an ***. Cops are human beings. some good, some bad. these people see humanity at it's absolute worst every single day. I can't even imagine what sort of mental price they have to pay to do this everyday. of course they're not going to take any unnecessary chances but are going to follow procedure which is there for a reason. I mean c'mon, how many of us have to go to work every day with the very REAL risk of something terrible happening. I admire these people and am amazed you don't hear about cops going nuts & shooting everyone. I'm not a cop, but sometimes the general public makes ME want to shoot everyone. So be glad I'm not armed. And give the cops a break.

Cops deal with a very stressful and dangerous job. I think that can make them unyeilding and difficult to deal with. Additionally, the folks who end up in this line of work tend to be people with rather ordinary skills and intelligence. The requirements and pay for law enforcement needs to be far higher to attract better candidates.

Yeah, they deal with assholes, sounds like you've been dealing with them! The way I see it is they put their lives on the line, they are challenged by almost every jerk that doesn't want to admit they've ****** up, and their jobs are constant stress but they work through it, they've earned the right to be aggressive and not be challenged! Give them a break!

If all you a--holes think it's an easy job...go do it! Cops have to do things you would never do.
Ever walk down a dark alley alone? Ever enter a dark bulding knowing a burglar is hiding in it? Ever have bottles thrown at you just because you wear a uniform? Try it sometime. 99% of you wouldn't last the first hour. Guaranteed.

If a stranger was breaking into your home or harming your family, the first thing you would do is call 911. You wouldn't call the responding police dickheads if they put their lives on the line to save yours.

Hey, when you find out the answer to that question, tell me, because i too am curious. i've posted Qs before and never had any cops answer me why the cops in my town give me so much crap.
but i did get alot of people who stood up for cops, but those people never have to deal with them, strange coincidence huh?
EDITED: Ken and Wendy, i am ALWAYS polite to cops saying yes sir and doing as i am told (even when i'm not held at gunpoint, just for getting out of my car) but they are usually pricks to me (one even tried to tell me that my car wasn't mine, but it was under my name, the only time i have argued with a cop, and i STILL was respectful as i was in an accident and still in disbelief)
