Are you talking about how much to spend on a gift, or how much to donate towards the wedding expenses? In either case, I would say it would completely depend upon family finances, and what you can afford to spend. For some families, $40 may be too much, while other families could afford 10's of thousands of dollars.

If it is a daughter they just paid for her whole darn wedding. Does she think they held back some money from that to give at the "going rate."

Here is something I heard once. Friends of ours gave their daughter 10 grand and said what ever she had left over at the end was hers to keep!
Love it and I think we will use it on my three daughters.
