If you're not comfortable with the subways and taxis AND
If you have walking shoes AND
If the weather is cooperative
You could walk from Penn Station to Times Square as the other posters pointed out.
You could walk from Times Square to Ground Zero. The distance is nowhere near 7 miles - more like 3.
You could walk from Ground Zero to China Town.
The key is 7th and 8th Avenues and Broadway.
China Town is a short walk from Ground Zero - probably along 14th St. (NYC natives correct this if wrong).
Enjoy your trip.

Times Square is on 42nd or 45th street. Something like that. Ground Zero is in lower Manhattan - the financial district. Chinatown is not too far north of that. I'm sorry, but I can not remember where Penn Station is. It's somewhere in the middle of all of that. Greenwich Village is artsy and full of pubs where singers like Bob Dylan have played. The Empire State Building is up near Central Park (60th St.) The other end of the park (110th St.) is the beginning of Harlem. The blocks in New York are very big. You might be at 200 Fifth Ave. and think to walk to 800 Fifth Ave. and end up walking several miles. I did this once. Everything in NYC is North/South. The subway runs N/S and stops everywhere that you will need. The subway in Manhattan is safe even though there are a few, different people. There are lots of taxis so some people just wait on the curb and try to hail one. There are lots of cops walking around NYC.

You are close to everything by subway. Get a subway map and ask the clerk to point out where the stations are for each of the places above. From north to south, times square, penn station, chinatown, ground zero. If you can stand the height, go to the top of the Empire State Building (100 stories).

The World Trade Center site is about 7 miles south of Times Square, at the southern tip of the island. You can walk from Penn Station to Times Square, it's only about 8 blocks straight up 7th Ave. From Times Square you can get to the WTC site by subway by taking the E train downtown to the World Trade Center stop, or you can take the A, C, 2, or 3 trains downtown to Chambers Street. It's a 15 minutes subway ride.
The heart of Chinatown is Canal Street, a number of subway lines stop along it. It's not a very far walk from the WTC; you'd want to walk up Broadway. (From the WTC site, walk east on Varrick or Fulton or Barclay until you get to Broadway; it's only a block. Turn left on Broadway and you'll walk past city hall. I think it's only a 10 or 15 minute walk to Canal Street from there. When you get to Canal, turn right and you'll be in Chinatown. You can also take the A, C, or E train to Canal Street.
But first thing you should do when you get to Penn Station is get a subway map. They're available for free from kiosks around Penn Station or the subway booths.

You are so lucky to visit NYC! It is a great city. From Penn Station, you can connect easily to the MTA subway system. Times Square is about eight blocks north and 3 or 4 blocks east of Penn Stn. It's an easy walk. Form Times Sq., hit the subway You can take the 1,2 or 3 trains and exit the subway at Chambers Street Stn. From there you are only a 3 block walk south to the edge of the WTC site. Check out the MTA's web-site for more info.
Have a great day!

I would reccomend seeing a show on/off Broadway. Go to Chinatown if you like fashion and knock-off designer purses, shoes, cologne, etc... You NEED to find a good bagel place and a hole-in the wall place for a slice of NY pizza. The smaller and dirtier looking, the better. MoMA was mentioned above and is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. My all-time favorite museum! You must ride the subway at least once, just say you had the experience. Coney Island is fun, but it is crowded and dirty. Yes, Ground Zero is eye-opening, but you can't get anywhere close to it and you can't really take pictures because there's fences up everywhere. The statue of Liberty is great but you will be in line for a few hours if you plan on going to the top, same with the Empire States Building. Personally, I have been to NY many a time due to family living there, and I don't bother with the tourist-y stuff... NY is best just walking around a people-watching, looking in store windows and eating a Bagel & Schmear in a street-side restaraunt... but that's me! Have a BLAST! It's not hard to in such a great city! A really good magazine to get before you go is called "Time Out New York City" it has all of the shows, street fairs and other entertainment that's happening that month. It's the best!

There is a map of the subway on at the station. Get a card filled. It takes about 1/2 hour by train, and 60 minutes by bus.
