Mirage that is so true. When we conquer ourselves we stop projecting on others, and then we are able to see clearly, and assist in a more real way.

I find this to be a rather ironic question.

My suggestion is to meditate, or whatever it is you do for your view of things, on the statement in question, and work out what it means to you, and why. why do you think this is so, or not so? why would one conquer others? why conquer yourself? whats it mean by its better, ect.

IMO part of the very essence of the statement, is that the answers are inside. if your answers come from others, they are just as fleeting as anything else from outside(which is, nearly everything) but if you come to the answer through your own mind, means and capabilty, then it will be much more unshakable and meaningful.

To master yourself is to be victoriuos in life. Once you have conquered your fears and downfalls then you can help other people conquer themselves. Conquering others will not help you at all in the long run. First conquer yourself in one area then help someone else with their battles. Life will be more rewarding than any spoils of battling and defeating people.

,Agree. I think the self is the biggest battle to conquer. Throwing fear, swords , or guns at others is easy, but to see ones own fears and be alone in them, and conquer all of the judgments and pity, and hate inside oneself; well, there you got a real battle on your hands.

I think Buddha was referring to the Ego, and yes after you conquer it the illusion of separateness fades, and with it the need or rather desire to try and conquer another.
