Remove all the radios from the house so they can't zone out on Rush Bimbaugh and company. Remove the TV so they can't watch Fox News and believe it is really news. Get a few hundred decent books from all sides of the polical spectrum on current events. Let them pick what they want to read but no tv and no radio.
If they do their reading, start letting the listen to any podcasts by Daniel Schorr and Diane Rehms. - Then they can follow up on the podcasts by reading real books written by real reporters or writers.
If nothing else, they will probably be nicer people since constant exposure to vituperative, lying, bombasts tends to make the listener believe that everyone else but he and the current host are wrong. Good luck.

Terminal ignorance is quite rare, however, if you come across it and feel compelled to treat it, do as follows.
Take the time to get mildly acquainted with the patient
(exercise patience).
Attempt to find out what they are passionate about.
Once you have ascertained that they have some working knowledge about the subject, investigate it yourself
Now using what you have learned about their favorite subject use
parallels and metaphors of their understanding to enlighten them on what you think they most urgently need to know.

Tolerance. Kindness. Do not give in to the urges to be rude or sarcastic no matter what. The only way to stop ignorance is not oto spread it.

Ignorance is okay...
It's stupidity that annoys me. For stupid people, there should be a capture-neuter-release program... humane, of course... and all we can do is hope that their numbers dwindle.
