For a flat with kids, I recommend Boston Terriers, Pugs, Bichon Frise, Miniature poodle..All are great with kids, clownish and entertaining..Dogs that are a mix of any of the above would be even better...
check out the dogs listed here..they are a great bargain, and the description will tell just how they are with children..
Put in your own zip code to find the ones nearest you...then click on any picture to get more information on that dog>>

I have an English Bulldog. They are great with kids and don't need much space. They are couch potatoes. They are protective of family members but not to the point where they would go after someone coming to to door. Mine does not shed much.I once read in a Bulldog book that they are great watch dogs, They will watch someone take everything right out of the house so if you are looking for a watch dog it wouldn't be a good choice. They are intimidating by looks but very friendly dogs. I would definitely recommend the English Bulldog especially for for the fact of being great with kids.

Actually a pug is a HORRID dog for a small apartment for kids. They have MAJOR health problems and can be very mean.
I advidse a shitzu I am not exact on the spelling but my vet reccomended this to us along with out friends vet. THey are very tolerable, sweet, loyal dogs that do not shed and only want love.

My friend is a Maltese that lives in her apartment in NYC and uses a special doggie litter box even. But you should try to find one or a similar lovable guy at a no-kill shelter or SPCA nearby so you can save a life while you gain a son or daughter. Pure breds are almost always less healthy and resilient in my experience anyways, due to overbreeding. We have had both mixed and pure in our house.

toy poodles are good and don't shed. we had a toy poodle and my mom taught kids' piano lessons - he was always very tolerant with kids. he wasn't exactly thrilled with kids (b/c he was small and not sure what the kids would do), but he was always very kind and tolerant, never bit or even growled at kids.

I would say a spaniel. I don't think it matters, it could be a Cocker Spaniel. I have two English Springer Spaniels and I love them. They don't get very bg and these two are shy around strangers.
