People need something to believe in because they need something to hold on to. Something that will stay constant and not change (to them at least). Life is so full of change and people take comfort in knowing that thing they believe in will never change.

Belief helps to deal with the unexplainable; gives us a place in our community; allows us to communicate with friends and family on a deep level; and gives us meaning in our lives. It helps to answer the question of how we are connected to everything and the continuity of our small lives in a much bigger picture.
Belief could also be an evolutionary adaptation that allows us to continue on with day to day living when we are unable to explain things through evidence or through demonstration. With the increasing complexity of society and the advancement of science during the industrial revolution, belief was no longer as important. Many beliefs that were held about the universe such as the solar system, bacteria, viruses, an so on were found to be untrue. The areas of our lives which were unexplainable have been retreating for the last few centuries.

What people need is a way to cope with the anxiety of problems beyond our control and the eventual reality of our own death and the deaths of people we love. Religion has served that purpose, explaining the unexplainable, reassuring the ill & grieving, and suggesting that there is an overarching plan.
Buddhists, agnostics and atheists who find other ways to cope with their anxiety look not for a God to intervene and protect, but instead a skilled development of internal peace and freedom from longing for security. Still others use drugs, psychotherapy, or sitting long hours in internet question-and-answer forums.

Not all need god to believe. But most of us, who become desperate, like me, to know the reason for things happening around us, good or bad tend to believe in god as if he is the answer.

I don't agree with your premise, though your avatar is quite cute. People don't "need something to believe in." But if they wish to avoid hell and be reconciled to their Creator, they need to learn of His requirements and be made right with Him. This happens through repentance of sin (breaking God's law; i.e., one of the Ten Commandments where lusting=adultery and hate=murder), and belief in Jesus and the fact that he paid the penalty for sin.
