Do you think physically PUNISHING a child is okay?

Pro or Con

I do NOT mean beat or abuse them!
I just mean slapping their hands or spanking them if neccesary.

I believe that corporal punishment is perfectly acceptable within limits. After all, most of our generation received corporal punishment, and our parents didn't really worry about whether or not it was going to crush our spirits. They also didn't worry about being our friends, because they knew that their role was to be a parent. They understood rules and boundaries and made us respect them and their place in our lives. We even got spanked at school, and everyone thought it was just fine.

Put me in the pro column.

Spare the rod and spoil the child. I do believe in spanking. But not all negative actions require a spanking though. Most times talking to the child and ensuring that they understand why the action is not appropriate is all it takes. But when a spanking is necessary, the parent should practice restraint at all times. Now, that said, I will not allow someone else to spank my kids. I know I will practice restraint, but I can't guarantee someone else will. I would suggest reading Dare to Discipline by James Dobson.

I spank my son all the time when he is bad and he would never hit or put his hands on another child. He did however throw a rotten pear at my friend the other day outside (they were goofing around, he is 4) and when it hit me I said Hey what the heck and he laughed and said well, you always spank me... What a little punk, lol.

I disagree with hitting a child with a paddle or a strap or anything for that matter. You could end up hitting them too hard and really hurting them rather than teaching them a lesson. Ever see the picture of the dead little girl with hanger marks all over her body? It's called child abuse.

I believe physical punishment teaches physical behavior. If your child takes a toy away from somebody else-- you slap their hand--- later someone takes a toy away from them, so they slap the kid--what do you do then?? Slap them for slapping the other kid? It is exactly what you have taught them.
I think explaining why the behaviour is wrong and giving a time out or taking away a toy works just fine.

There is a BIG difference, I believe in discipline but not beating .......
The punishment must fit the age as well, you dont paddle a 1 year old when they do something wrong you slap their hand or as i do put them in time out...

If you can avoid physically punishing a child I think you should avoid it at all cost.

no....i do not.

how can you hit, slap or spank a child and then tell them it is not ok to hit another person. that doesn't make sense. why would a parent even want to lay a hand on their child like that.

i use "time out" when they are young and i ground them or take away a privilege when they are older for punishment.

Spanking is a last resort, for me. But I think there would be a lot less wild children running and screaming through stores if more parents would give up the "naughty step" and just paddle an a** now and then.

If you mean beating no!
Children should be taught the consequence of their actions to enable them to understand what is right and wrong.
If an adult does not have either the intelligence or communication skills to do this they should locate assistance.
As it is illegal to physically attack someone in the street, a partner at home or an animal who could all fight back if really necessary, it should also be illegal to hit a child that is probably half your body weight and size and who has little or no chance of defending them selves, let alone fighting back.

Yes I am pro on the physical punishment.

Kids these days run wild and walk all over their parents because they do not fear the punishment. They can do whatever the heck they want and not have to suffer any substantial consequence. GO SIT IN THE CORNER!!!

Oooohhhh Im shivering in my Johns. PLEASE! Kids need physical punishment. There is a limit though. I don't believe in beatings or using belts and hangers. Just a firm whap on the bum should do the trick!
