This used to be some kind of relegious holiday,i think in may or june each year but it seemed to disappear. What was it for and what happened to it?

It is Pentecost, the Christian holiday, a movable one that this year was in mid May I believe. It was originally coincident with the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.

whitsuntide, or White Sunday, is Pentecost. It's observed 50 days after Easter, and commemorates the coming of the Holy Ghost to the apostles of the early Christian church

it was an english holiday, celebrated in the time of king henry 8th and other like that. it actually was their own version of pentecost. the english courts liked to party, so even tho they werent particularly religious (in application :-p), they did celebrate it :-p

quite possibly the origin of the surname "whitson"
