They shave some hair, apply some gel, and roll a device over her abdomen to determine what's going on. It's just like a pregnant woman having her ultrasound done. But most of the time, they wont be able to tell about asthma. They will be able to tell if there is any cancer, abnormalities, or organs that dont look quite right. Asthma is VERY hard to diagnose in a cat.

The ultrasound cant show anything as far as asthma goes-it could tell if there is fluid in the lung, but not the asthma. It could tell certain types of cancer, depending on where the location of it is-but not the lung or the bowel,or the bones. Hairballs are common especially in long haired cats and then comes the hacking, the coughing ,and looks like the cat is getting ready for birth through the mouth!!(but, unless you've recently aquired the cat,I'm sure you know all this) I'm still not certain what is transpiring through you note,is it not producing the hairball and your worried it's too large to come out??Or is the cat just doing a lot of coughing and wheezing ?? Trust the vet,I'm sure he'll have the cat's best interest at heart.

Ultrasound is a non-invasive testing device/technique which uses sound waves to see into solid (liquid filled) organs. The most commonly used analogy is sonar. Sonar is used in the navy by surface ships to find submarines (among many other situations). The ship transmits sound waves into the water which reflect off the submarine and return to the ship, revealing the submarine's location. At some risk of oversimplification, cancer can be revealed in your cat's (or any other animal) abdomen because cancer reflects the sound waves differently than healthy tissue. Ultrasound cannot be used in the lungs because of the air they contain. Best wishes!

The cat will be shaved over the area to be investigated and a gel with be applied. A small device will be rolled over the area and ultrasonic sound waves will travel into the body and bounce back when they hit a solid thereby rendering a picture of the inside of your cat. Isn't science fun?
