W is called a double-u because that's what it came from. In the original Latin alphabet (the precursor to our modern alphabet), some modern letters were not available. Letters like j and w. U/V (there was no distinction between the two on paper) was used as the vowel and the consonant; like a modern u and w.
Scribes in medieval Europe needed a way to differentiate between the consonant and vowel function, and so wrote two u's together to make the consonant form. Thus was the double-u born.

Are you just picking on W because it has the longest name? I mean we don't say "See - rap" when we think poorly of something either now, do we? That is why each letter has a name AND a sound(s). They are not one and the same thing. See: phonics. (as opposed to pee-aitch-onics) :)

ever notice how a W kinda looks like the old Madonna's boobs?

maybe its a conspiracy brought about by the evil McDonald's food chain what with their holier than thou arches. not just regular arches mind you, GOLDEN arches. symbolizing their attitude that their arches are better than your or anyone Else's arches. perhaps even intimating that their arches in fact come from god, bestowed upon them for the sole purpose of debasing all other arches.

the letter "W" or "double U". Now you get it. Its all about the way it looks like. Nothing about pronounciation.

no... but i think it has something to do with the fact that a "w" looks like 2 u's put together.... (even though it looks more like 2 v's)
