Is anyone in the national guard? I guess if you enlist now, you get 20k for signing up, plus 1400 a month. But this makes me wonder why they are so desperate for people?

What do you think are my chances of going to Iraq?

I really don't want to go to iraq, Id rather do border patrol or something, cap dem bitches trying to come into arizona.

Do you think if they tried to send me to iraq, I could just pull the whole IM GAY thing?

I do not think money is worth it. Find different ways of making money. I hear our servicemen are so desperate that a lot of them have committed suicides. I do not know if the gay thing will work. They could be so desperate.

As a navy Recruiter I can say that the National Guard is the same as the Army. The difference is that the Govern er of the state controls you. Expect to head to Iraq for a bit. The whole "gay thing" doesn't always work when you are getting ready to deploy overseas. Simple solution, if you are interested in serving your country, do your research and do it right the first time.

A month of so ago the news had a story about a man who signed up, served eight years, and believed he would be able to then leave. The government put a "stop loss" order on, which meant he can't get out; and he could be forced to stay until he's 50 years old.

Another young man signed up but wanted non-gun duty because of his religion. He said he was promised he could serve without being involved in shooting, but he was trained to use the gun and sent where it would be needed. He is now serving prison time for leaving (or refusing to do what he was ordered to do).

Right now it is extremely unrealistic to believe you won't be sent to Iraq. The only way anyone should sign up is if they realize they are very likely to be sent to Iraq (or somewhere similar) and they are willing to do that.

20k is definetely for certain types of MOS, and for a long contract. i would say if you dont want to get deployed overseas theres a method to the madness. 3 or 4 yr contracts only, because you can ensure you go to a unit that is going to the border with mexico for a year, with your training thats yr and a half. the rules say for everyday you are "deployed" (ie to the border) you cannot be put on deployment orders for that many number of days regardless if you are reserves or guard unless its a state of emergency (ie katrina), so thats about 2 1/2 yrs, volunteer to do airport security or some chummy assignment to fill in the gap or look to jump to another unit thats just come back to fill in the last few months. its very difficults cuz its a lot of paperwork and risky political waters to navigate but i have known a good amount of enlisted folks who have not deployed. if you really do like the money and they have good MOS like Information Technology or highly educational stuff, do it cuz a lot of ppl that are too valuable dont leave the Forward Operating Bases over there at all and you get really great training when you get out. and since you are enlisted once your enlistment contract is over and you are released you are done, they cannot call you back unlike officers

Check closely, the 20k is probably only for certain MOSs like lingustics or something ike that. Even then it's not 20k in one lump sum, my enlistment and reenlistment bonuses were paid 1/2 up front (taxed like you wouldn't believe) and the other half paid over te next five years. and the 1400 a month assumes you will be going in as an E-2.

You basicly will go to Iraq within the next 18 months, that is way about 90 percent chance, So that is why they have trouble getting people. If not Iraq some other place still not very nice.

But yes a great opportunity.

Plan to go to Iraq, but if you still want to join, then join the Air National Guard.

i am in the national guard... it depends on the MOS (job in the military) you choose for you to get the 20K. now for the 1400 a month..... thats only if you are active national guard and it also depends on your rank. i only make 150 a month! if you are only doing it for the money there are other ways you can make money!
