My wife and I are going to NYC in November; we're getting a hotel near La Guardia, staying thursday night, going to NYC on Friday, then going to NJ Friday evening. So we have to take our luggage and store it in manhatten or something; it's impractical to go back to La Guardia, and we can't afford Manhatten hotel prices. That being said, where should we store our luggage? Amtrak is too expensive to get to NJ and they don't have trains when we need them. Penn station apparently doesn't have lockers anymore? Ideally we'd store it for free, but we're willing to pay a few bucks.

We're going to Princeton (staying w/ a friend), so it's not convenient to store luggage there. I'll investigate the storage places mentioned, or I'll try the hotel in Manhatten. Other ideas welcome!

I knew about the Penn station Amtrak, which is a great option if you are taknig Amtrak. However the ticket price was $40 each to go to Princeton which is ridiculous (it's 50 miles away, you could rent a car or taxi for the same price). Plus the timing doesn't work out.

I travel to NYC about 5 times a year - and the best thing to do is to go to ANY hotel, go to the bell hop station and simply ask if you can store your bags for the day. It'll cost you a few bucks/ plus tip - but it's totally worth it. Pick a reputable large chain hotel - somewhere near where you plan to hang out for the day. It works kind of like a coat-check, you'll get a reciept to identify which bags are yours - and they'll store your bags in a safe place.

Some hotels may act a bit snarky if they know that you are not guests at their hotel - but no need to tell them that (unless they ask). I do it all the time and no one has ever given me trouble about it. Even hotels where I've explained that I'm not a guest - they've been more than happy to let me store luggage (I guess they still see you as a potential future guest - so they want to make a good impression).

If worse comes to worse and they say no - just try another hotel.

I found out just this weekend (under similar circumstances; a friend was visiting me in Brooklyn and we went to Manhattan during the day he was leaving and it was impractical to go back to Brooklyn for his luggage) that Penn Station DOES have a baggage check, but only for Amtrak or NJ Transit customers, so if you do decide to take a train to NJ, that would be the way to go. It's about $4/bag, it's located to the far left of the ticket counters in the Amtrak/NJ Transit part of the station.

Otherwise, I second the idea to just check your luggage at a hotel. Although I haven't done it in New York (since I live here) I have in other cities. It is true that there aren't any storage lockers anywhere in Manhattan anymore.

Where in NJ are you going? If it is close to the city, I would recommend dropping off your bags at the NJ hotel (most hotels will let you drop off your bags prior to checking in at no cost) and then going back into the city. The PATH train is only $1.50 each way in and out of NYC to NJ, and the bus can be as low as $2.30 (depending on where in NJ you are going) to go in and out of Port Authority Bus Terminal.
