Cat food. Both wet and dry. Science diet is a good brand. Strays eat pretty much anything, but they are still very clean animals.

In the wild, cats are primarily carnivores. They eat the flesh of just about any mammal or bird or fish. They'll catch and eat insects as well, but not as a primary diet. They also will eat grasses, for medicinal reasons. It's not above them to eat berries, but more from curiousity than it being their actual diet. As pets, cats will eat a lot of other things. Ice cream, green beans, potato chips... depending on the particular cat, if its human offers it a food, it might try it and like it. Human food isn't particularly good for cats. Something I've noticed in domesticated cats is that they will almost always turn their noses up at spoiled meat. If the cat won't eat it, we'd better not eat it. Cooked meat or fish, given in tiny portions on rare occasions, won't upset the cat's dietary needs. As stated in other posts, there are a number of production cat foods available that will meet the cat's dietary requirements. Generic and store brand cat foods, whether solid or moist, should be avoided because their grain content is too high and their protein content too low. Science Diet is good, Purina is OK and Meow Mix is OK. If you give your cat only soft food, his teeth will suffer. He needs the crunchies in order to keep his teeth and gums clean and exercised.

In the wild, cats are obligate carnivores. This means they eat only meat. Domesticated cats may occassionally eat birds or mice, but generally live on cat food which is formulated to provide the nutrition which they would otherwise get from hunting game. It would be unwise to allow a domestic cat to roam freely to catch their own dinner. Unless the cat had a feral, or wild, mother, it wouldn't know how to catch its own food, or at least not enough to live on. Also, feeding a domestic cat hamburgers or fried chicken would not be wise as cooked meat doesn't provide it with the necessary nutrients it would get from eating a whole mouse or other small critter. Stick with a cat food which is high in protein, low in carbohydrates and which is complete and balanced. Happy eating!

cat food, fish .... a long time ago, cats ate mice, chase after rats and eat them up. Nowadays, all cats are very domesticated and rely on humans to feed them. They no longer has the ability to hunt down food on their own. So even if a mouse appears, they probably wouldn't chase after it. ok ... back to what cats eat .... they eat most of the things that humans feed them i guess looking at the many variety of food given to them daily at the void deck, nice meal. :)

They eat rodents and birds in the wild if they can. Mimic this with a high protein and fat (meat) diet that isn't high in corn or rice. Avoid grocery store brands as they shorten the life and health of the cat.

Dry food alone is ok - and they waste is cleaner and harder. However having some wet food as a supplement - makes the food more enjoyable and varied.
