While travelling, I'd like to back up my photos without paying to have CDs burned, or waiting hours to upload over slow connections, or carrying a stack of SD cards.

The Epson P-2000 does everything I want and more, but at $600 it's way too expensive. Since I already have a spare external hard disk, I'd like to find some kind of teeny processor that's just smart enough to execute a copy command between the camera and my hard disk.

I recently saw a tiny fully functional computer running Linux, the size of a pack of gum. Only 2 problems with using it for this purpose: it has no display or input device and at $186 it's still too expensive for what I want.

I appreciate the two suggestions regarding the Digidock and the Jobo Giga Vu. If I didn't have a spare external hard disk already, I would probably go and get one of those.

When I travelled overseas last year I took a 30 GB portable HDD device called a Digidock . For exactly the same reason.
It worked perfectly (its a Toshiba HDD)...and it allowed us to take tons of photos. You just transfer the files from your card by inserting the card in the unit.
And when we went out for the day we put it in our backpack and guarded it with our lives...lol (not trusing to leave it in the hotel)
I'm sure if you look around, you can find something far cheaper than the Epson...that performs reliably.
You really don't need something with a fancy colour screen.(that's why the Epson or others like it, are so expensive).

I have the Jobo Giga Vu Pro. All you need to do is put in the memory card and follow the prompts to back up the files. But, it's also expensive like the Epson.

you are able to replica photos of all the no longer easycontinual (or partitions of it) with the aid of making use of Norton Ghost with the aid of Symantec. that's extremely trouble-free certainly. you are able to fix those photos at any time. you are able to back up your image the two on an exterior no longer easycontinual or on dvd's. earlier taking your no longer easycontinual image setting up the motive force of your alternative no longer trouble-free disk (the one hundred twenty GB one) on your contemporary no longer easycontinual. Then all you ought to do is mount the recent no longer easycontinual and function the Ghost image restored. each thing may be the comparable as you left it and you will have your new no longer trouble-free disk's greater suitable means.

As far as I know, you would need an appliance like the P2000 or a computer.
With the size of SD's available, you must take a LOT of pictures at high resolution to need a 'stack' of cards.

I hear you - I'm looking for something like that myself. It just doest'n exist.
Perhaps you could use other people's PCs along the way - or even internet cafes - and simply plug your camera/ memory card + hard drive into that to transfer files.
