I read they are supposed to be 10 to 13 lbs but mine is 18 lbs and he's also 4 inches taller than the specs. Is it normal for the breed to vary that much? He's a year old and very active.

My first one of three is much bigger than the AKC standard. You must have bought pet quality as I did. You are aware of the breed standard and I am sure you visited many web sites. I have no interest in breeding or showing him. We all love this little critter so much. I am glad he has an under bite. He is very unusual because he is all black. If he did not have the under bite he would not be mine cause the breeder would have kept him as a "show dog". His life would have been a lot different then. He is a special boy, my best boy and I am thankful to God to allow me to share my life with him.

WOW! He sounds pretty tall! Generally, the English lines tend to be a bit bigger and have more bone. A friend of mine has an English bred *****, and she is a BIG girl. She never did finish, just to much dog for the American judges.

My little male hairless is only 9 lbs.

The American bred ones don't seem to vary all that much in size. Did you get him from a show breeder? Of course, if its from some other kind of breeder, they are not at all concerned if they are within size, so anything goes.

All breeds vary in size depending on the ancestry. I have a mini Dachshund who weighs 11 lbs and was supposed to be 6 lbs. My Norwegian Forest cat is as small as a regular house cat, but should be more the size of my Maine Coon mix. My Coonhound weighs 45 and should weigh 65. It just depends on breeding. Size may disqualify a dog for certain show events in some associations however.

Great breed you have BTW, I'd have one but they gross my husband out.

it depends on the breeding. some breeders just happen to have dogs that are slightly taller than breed standard, and some slightly shorter. but because you are not showing your dog, it doesn't matter. i've seen toy poodles that are so tall they could pass for miniature poodles. as a matter of fact, my own toy poodle was probably considered too short for a toy poodle.

so yes it is normal - it doesn't mean your dog was bred badly or will develop any health problems later on in life, it just means that that's the way he turned out.

depends on how ethical /good, the breeder was... if yours was from a pet store it doesnt surprise me since pet stores sell the lowest quality - if from a reputable breeder I would call her and ask
