if I have to use my husbands card, I sign his name, but put my initials next to it...credit card company has never told us not to do it that way

You can use it but only at the pump other than that stores ask for ID and if the card is not in your name then to them its fraud even thogh its your husband. I have the same situation my wife lets me use the card but it is in her name so I can't buy anything unless I go and take money out from the atm or just use it to pump gas.

Only the person whose name appears on the card can use it

If you're name is not on the account, then you're not authorized to use it. With American Express, they're not transferrable.
