I learned when I was a boy that if you don't know the marital status of a woman it is proper to refer to her as "Mz". Ms. was for an unmarried woman and Mrs. of course was for a married woman. This practice seems to have changed or been forgotten. Thanks!

I don't believe that's correct. If you don't know her marital status, you should still refer to her as "Ms." Mz was just an accented word for "ms" in the deep south, I believe. I could be wrong though.

It is perfectly acceptable to address a woman as Ms. (but notice the spelling). If she prefers a different mode of address, she will tell you. The practice is very definitely still in use!

No, you can use Ms. - Miss is for an unmarried woman. Ms. is for divorced/feminist/unknown status.

Ms., pronounced "miz", can still be used as a title for a woman whose status you don't know. If you are calling her, though, you might want to use "ma'am". I think that many more women are using this title today than when we were young.
