My license plate holder on my car was broken off, and while I was waiting for my new one to arrive, I put my license plate in my dash for temporary. I was pulled over by a state policeman, and he gave me a ticket for "improper mount". I asked him what am I supposed to do in my situation, and he said, "I don't really know, just don't drive the vehicle." It just doesn't seem right to me. What should I have done in that situation if I had to wait to receive the holder? How else could I have done that? And what should I do in court? I don't have a receipt either because it was a friend of mine who works at the dealership who brought the holder home to me 2 hours after I got the ticket! (He was already on his way)

On one hand, I think it is rather nit picky.

But if the law states that in order to drive your car, the plate must be mounted on the car and not displayed in the windshield, then technically, your car is not street legal. If it is not street legal, then you risk a ticket by driving it.

Again, I said it was nit picky. I would talk to the judge. They just might think the same thing and throw it out. Hopefully the judge is in a good mood and is having a good day.

Part of this depends on what state you are in. In some states, placing the plate in the windshield is good enough., In Texas, it is not good enough since the law says attached to the vehicle.

When my son got the same ticket (the front plate mount had ripped off in ana ccident and the plate was sitting on the floor with the mount still attached, we explained to the judge what had happened and showed him the plate was fixed. He still found us guilty, but reduced the fine to half. He explained that a good temprary fix is to use plastic tie strips or string to tie the plate to the bottom of the grill, and that this would meet the law.

I have been stopped for an improper mount in Virginia.

I ran into a roadblock that was checking on people that owed the personal property tax. My car was fine but I did not have a front license plate, it was a Mazda Miata, the front license brackets bend and screw up the plastic bumpers. When the policewoman asked me I showed her I kept the second license plate inside of the car. She told me to go home and screw it back in. No ticket.

normally the "holder" merely attaches with the same two screws into the bumper and frame and the plate could have stlil been put on the car without a holder. ( I don't have a holder on any of my autos)

but yes it is against the law to not have the tag displayed properly.

You need to have your friend who works at the dealership come to court as a witness on your behalf.

I'm not a cop but, get a tow truck, take it to a garage and pay someone to fix it.. call someone to come and fix it or fix it yourself.

If need be call the police for a ride if you are in an emergency situation.

DO NOT BREAK THE LAW IF YOU DONT WANNA TAKE THE CHANCE OF BEING CAUGHT.

EVEN THOUGH IT MAY SEEM INSIGNIFIGANT TO YOU IT CAUSES OTHERS TO NOT KNOW WHY THE PLATE IS NOT THERE.

IF NEED BE REPORT THE INITIAL CRIME TO NOT PERPETUATE IT BY NEGLECT.

What is more important saving a few bucks or having to go to court? ish happens.

"It is like any other breakdown that violates your particular traffic laws"

The plates are there for a reason. If there is an absense of reason in the law.. highlight it.. but know why the law exists in the first place. If it is outdated or redundant or has no modern context.. it is your duty to remove the law from common acceptance. If not you are neglecting some segment of that culture which is prosecuting you.

The law probably says you are required to have 2 plates mounted to the frame in front and back. The trooper did his job writing you a ticket. Explain to the judge your concerns. Bottom line is you were wrong so remember this when speaking to the judge. Mount the front plate where it belongs or you may get another ticket.

This is an easily droppable case. Bring the order form for the new frame, your friend should have his copy, at least. If not, bring the friend as a witness. As long as the date snd time on the order form is before the ticket, case dismissed. The cop SHOULD have given you a "Fix it" ticket.

Just pay the ticket. What if you had a signal not working, wouldn't you expect a ticket? If you're wrong and get a ticket, pay the ticket. It's really simple.
