Actually its an issue of supply and demand. The Army is the largest branch of the military and therefore always in the greatest need of numbers. The DOD makes it easy for Marines to go Army but difficult for Soldiers to go USMC. It has little to do with the style or intensity of basic training but merely that the DoD wants all roads to lead to the Army or Navy because this is where the demand is. This is the same reason why the Army and Navy always have larger reenlistment bonuses in an attempt to draw members from other services. If there was suddenly a day where the Army was over strength and the USMC badly needed people, you would see the USMC accept Army basic training as an equivalent. This happened between 1987-1989. The USMC numbers had fallen and the DoD decided to increase their total numbers by about 20,000. For a three year period, Soldiers could enlist into the USMC without having any additional training. Its all about "force shaping" from the perspective of the joint chiefs and the Secretary of Defense and has little to do with the training itself.. The Army only accepts USMC basic as an equivalent to theirs and requires USAF and Navy individuals to go through "Warrior Transition Course" or a mini 5 week basic for prior service members.

Popeye was in the COAST GUARD and I've got proof!!!!
Go rent "70 years of Popeye" and go to Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves You will see Popeye lounging under a sign that says "U.S. Coast Guard" at a small boat station.
I would challenge anyone to verify that he was in the Navy.....also remember that just because he was on a Navy ship does not prove anything During WW2 there were allot of coasties stationed on Navy Vessels

It's never really stated, but assumed (by his standard anchor tattoo) that he was in the Navy. From the history:
The year is 1929, January 17th, to be exact. A 10-year-old comic strip by Elzie Seagar: "The Thimble Theatre", which originally revolved around Olive Oyl's family, entertained a new character, not too brilliant, not too handsome, not too strong - it was a sailor, standing in the harbor - to the question: "ARE YOU A SAILOR" he replied: "Ja THINK I'M A COWBOY?" He was hired - and slowly, but surely, got rid of most of the old characters in the strip and received the lead together with his love - from those days till today - Ms. Oyl.

He was in the Navy, his tattoos may not have been enough to show that he was, but his uniform is the previous version of the Navy whites with the neck scarf and the sailor cover.

He was sailor wearing Navy clothes that sailed in non-descript ships. Think I remember both wooden and steel, but not sure about that, because was never big fan of that cartoon, and recall stuff that happened off the ship more than on it.

None he was part of a costumed singing quintet from New York. The others in the group were a policeman, an indian, a construction worker, and some guy who apparently did metal and leather work.
