Space saving ideas will depend on the size of your kitchen, the extent of your renovation project, and your budget.
Best finishes are easier to approach here with so little information about your project to go on:
Floors: Ceramic tile or cushioned vinyl sheet flooring. Avoid hardwood as spills will get between the planks and could present themselves as awful smelling reminders in the future. Also wood is less resistant to water damage and the routine wear patterns that form in the work triangle.
Counters: Granite if it's in the budget. Depending on your style, stainless might work. The new plastic laminates are a lot more appealing than those from even 10 years ago.
Cabinetry: Wood. Melamine is not very durable, lacquer paint finishes are quite expensive and often a bit more delicate to maintain a clean appearance.
Back-splash behind sink & oven: ceramic tile, stainless steel, or even glass.
Walls: use 100% acrylic paint. It is resistant to the heat, steam, smells and high traffic of a kitchen and is almost odourless when applied.
For kitchen renovation projects you really can benefit immeasurably by calling in a professional interior designer at least for one consultation -- you will be provided with information geared specifically for your kitchen's size, shape, style and budget.

Go for sleek cabinets that dont occupy much space. doors have to be sliding ones. house some cabinets under your kitchen island. Is possible have a small balcony space where you can have some herb plants. go for matt finish colours on your cabinets. A dash of bling can be added with chic handles like from http://igrab.com.au/handles. Bring in some bring colours with wall art and crockery.

Have a floor to ceiling cabinet fixed. That should take care of most of the kitchen storage and free up kitchen space.

This is something that needs more info. You have to think how you are going to use that space, the look you want, the finishes that would be best for what you are going to be using it for and best for your budget.
