It's true! Chicken soup has anti-viral qualities and it tastes good too. But homemade is best. Campbell's is loaded with sodium - not good.

Now, to PREVENT a cold, begin a regimen of 1000 mg. of Vitamin C per day. It may lessen the severity of a cold once you have one, but the best strategy is prevention!

I agree with the majority, Chicken Soup! Its a scientific fact! Do it the old fashioned way for best results, you know, Homemade! Boil a chicken till it the meat falls off the bone.Save the broth to cook your noodles or rice(optional) in. Ad to your broth, whole stalks of celery to taste, a bay leaf, lots of black pepper, salt and a Tbs of butter. You can also try hot Tea, Lemon and Honey for a sore throat and chills. My great grandmother was a firm believer in these remedies for a cold. I have a friend who swears that when he feels "stuffy headed", he eats chips and the hottest salsa he can find, it opens him up, so to speak. He sweats, his eyes water, his nose drips, and his mouth burns, but he says he feels better! To each his own.

My mothers chicken soup. Dude, seriously this stuff cures anything. I have been flat on my back in bed with pnumonia and got up to make this....not only does it taste good (cuz in my head it is supposed to cure anytthing, just ask my mom) but it is no fuss, well some fuss....

4 chicken breasts or thighs with bone in and skin on
water....you'll just know how much
4 to 5 stalks celery and carrots sliced into bite sized pieces
The hearts of the celery, the light green flaky stuff and all the leaves from the celery (this is important)
6 to 8 boullion cubes, chicken flavor, depending on how big the pot of water is (I use a large pot)
1 seriously large onion, sliced or diced

Thats it!

Boil the chicken in water, I like to use about 10 cups I would say if not 12. You will bring it to a rolling boil and then this brownish foam will appear on top of the water, skim it off , keep this up for an hour, but after water boils, bring it down to a gentle boil....
remove chicken after about an hour and it is clear on top of water. Set aside to cool. put all the veggies and the hearts of the celery into the water, keep to a simmer and add the bouillion cubes, debone and skin the chicken, chop it up and add it back in, let it simmer for 1.5 hours. Cook egg noodles separately and add to individual bowls. I swear, you'll sleep like a baby and wake up feeling great after a couple bowls of this stuff.

Hope you feel better!!!!!

Chicken soup hands down!! Orange juice for the Vitamin C benefit. Stay away from milk products as they are mucogenic...help produce mucus or nasal drainage. Drink plenty of water and get extra sleep. Good luck.

Chicken soup, but the chicken should be as fresh as possible.
Bone up on oranges and citrus.
You might want to eat a couple of aspirin too.

Go to a Chinese restaurant and order some hot and spicy soup; it's great for congestion and why you're at it, eat something with that real hot mustard they serve there.
