Hee, hee. Actually, marijuana WAS brought by the first settlers. You guys must be public school students. Marijuana's real name is HEMP, and it was and still is used to make rope, so the first settlers brought it with them.
I did a term paper in Criminal Justice class in the 70's on marijuana. I am going to tell you the real reason Marijuana is illegal.
After prohibition of alcohol failed, that Amendment to the Constitution was repealed. At that time, the liquor companies wanted to stiff the nearly free competition, so they spent millions on bogus advertising and lobbying, claiming falsely that marijuana turns you into a raging killer.
It was sort of like modern hoaxes on Global Warming and R-12 killing the ozone. No matter that it was false. Everyone got on the bandwagon, and agreed that pot makes you into a raging killer and made its use a Federal offense. And, so it has beensince then.
In 1894, the India Hemp Drug Commission found that it was better to have the people in India than to get them on alcohol.
In the 1920's, Mayor La Guardi of NYC had a commission study it, and also found that it would be a mistake to get people off pot and on booze.
Until prohibited by Federal law, doctors carried marijuana in their bags to be administered as a tranquilizer.
Study after study has shown unadulterated marijuana causes much less problem than alcohol.
Yet, pot is illegal and booze isn't. We are stupid as a nation.
Note I said unadulterated pot. Since it is illegal, you buy it from drug dealers, who routinely lace it with other drugs to get you addicted to really bad stuff so they can make lots more money.
Also, if you are caught with pot, it can ruin your future So don't use it as long as it's illegal.

It doesn't make any sense. Marijuana is one of the most harmless drugs. In fact there is no documented evidence of a pot overdose. By the way im not a pot head.
Also alcohol prohibition was already tried with no success and the "war on drugs" is a failure theres just too much morals and not enough reason running around Washington DC to drop it.

Because marijuana lobbyists don't have billions of dollars. Fact tobacco products kill over 430,000 people a year. Alcohol overdoses account for 5,000 deaths annually, 60% of those are under age teenagers. In the history of recorded medicine there have been 0 deaths due to marijuana overdose.
Also fact: The American Journal of Medice has done several independent studies on the effects of marijuana, exactly 0 have shown to have any adverse effects. As a matter of fact: during one study back in the late 80s, study participants, some who had cancer reported that they were experiencing less pain associated with their chemotherapy. Some who had cataracts reported better vision. So, in their effort to find an adverse effect, they found several benefits, hence the notion today of medicinal marijuana.
buttercup....correct people will do things they won't normally do while sober, like try to get the less stoned person to go get some more munchies. I used to be a pothead(for the Bush people who might be watching) "I did not inhale" Anyway when we used to get so stoned out of our minds we would find out who was the least stoned in the group, he was usually the one still standing up, and get him to go get more munchies. Have you ever heard of a person under the influence of marijuana robbing a convenience store, no, stoned people are too lazy to go through all that. In fact, we have been known to drop down a five dollar bill at the store for a bag of chips and a soda and not wait for the 2+ dollars change because we don't feel like standing around to wait. I want to remind the Bush eavesdroppers that I no longer smoke marijuana and it didn't make me want to do more drugs cause it worked just fine and didn't need to be supplemented, like cigarettes and alcohol.
owen...I beg to differ the Natives who were here before the colonists had been using hashish for generations before they arrived with the alcohol. Marijuana is simply a hybrid of hashish.
John S..I have been to rehab, because of work, but anyway just about everyone in rehab fills out a form when you get there to talk about your past drug use. Those who were addicted to the hardest drugs had tried cigarettes and alcohol long before they had tried marijuana. I myself started smoking when I was 13 and drinking when I was 15, I didn't start smoking marijuana until I was 19. Most of the people who filled out the survey started about the same way I did, I think out of about 25 people in my group only 2 had started their drug use with marijuana.

Sadly it really doesn't. Both are extremely unhealthy, and dangerous. However, alcohol is older, and has been used commonly be much of the world for centuries. The very first colonists comming to the New World carried barrels of ale and rum in their ships. Marijuana is relatively (agian, relatively compared to colonist-old) new, and viewed more as a "gateway drug", leading to use of even more dangerous and harmful drugs such as heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines. In all truth, it's likely that if alcohol (and nicotine for that matter) were discovered today, they'd be grouped in with marijuana and the rest as illicit narcotics.

They tried making Alcohol illegal at one point (Prohibition) but it didn't work out. Alcohol is not harmful unless it is in excess. Example: A glass of Red wine per day actually is a health benefit. Marijuana is harmful even in moderation.

Well, they originally legalized alcohol because it was being
"bootlegged" so they figured they might as well legalize it.
Now we know the terrible damage drunkeness causes to
automobiles and families basically. People will do things under
the influence that they wouldn't normally do otherwise (rape,
robbery, drive while drunk, puke, and sometimes die). Now,
we have the marijuana problem which also alters the mind and
how people who use it think differently. It's almost the same
how it affects people as the alcohol...people will do things when
under it's influence that they wouldn't normally do. So, guess
they feel it's best to not legalize it as they did alcohol as we now
know that was a terrible mistake and we need to learn from past
mistakes (don't we?).

Because the sale and distribution of alcohol can be both regulated and taxed. Marijuana can't. As long as that is the case, it will remain illegal and alcohol will remain legal.

It doesn't make any sense at all. I think it is so stupid that somethin that makes you so stupid and kills so many people a day can be legal. Alcohol has the absolute worst withdrawals of any drug (fact) and it can kill you when withdrawing. Marajuana just makes you eat a bunch of stuff and there is no withdrawals. You cannot become physically addicted to it!

et me tell you what I tell people on the streets when they have a little bit of MJ on them. I don't make the laws, I enforce them. If you care to smoke MJ, do it at your house. If you can't do that, then you should be asking your parents why they won't allow it before going to a public board. I probably won't arrest you if you are doing your thing in your house. Bring it out on the street and I'll hammer you just as hard as I can. More-so for being dumb than hating MJ.
