Don't get me wrong, I do understand that they need to have a firm disposition because they don't know who they're dealing with, among other things. But can't they tell what kind of person they're dealing with after talking to them for a minute? Why are they still mean to someone who isn't giving them a hard time? And yes I know not ALL cops are like this. I've come across it a lot though.

Only people with authoratative personalities become cops, so that can easily be misread ( or sometimes correctly read ) as bad or bitchy.

If you had to deal with people that act like a child throwing a tantrum, or someone constantly lying to you, or worse yet trying to harm you just about everytime you did a stop or responded to a call, you would be in a bad mood too. Seriously, you dont know who you are dealing with and when someone cops an attitude, it elevates the situation. Remember, the cop not only has to solve the problem whatever it is but has to try to keep everyone safe, including themselves. If people would just do these things, it would help resolve the situation; dont antagonize the cop for doing his job, be pleasant and cooperate. You can save yourself alot of time and heartache by doing so. Next DO NOT lie to the cop--it gives them reason to be suspicous of you. Lastly, never, ever, ever threaten a cop. Its bad news for everyone and could wind up in a very bad situation.

Well, I am sure it doesn't really brighten their day when they pull someone over that was obviously speeding, and they become belligerent and insult them personally for doing their job.

I have never had a cop that appeared to be in a "bad or bitchy mood". I treat them respectfully and own up to my mistakes. If they pulled me over, they more than likely had just cause (I am a lead foot).

Well, that's generalizing. I have met plenty of grumpy cops, as well as plenty of happy, helpful ones. Some of the grumpy ones may just have bad personalities. However, others may just be extremely stressed (imagine having to worry about getting shot every time you pull someone over for speeding, or even for a broken tail light), underpaid, or overworked. Some may be having personal problems at home, or with other officers. Police are human too, and we owe them a lot.

Typically because we have to deal with people that are in bad or bitchy moods and think they have the right to tell us about our wages, our authority, and we can and can not do. Always remember one thing, we deal with 5% of the public 95% of the time. Are we always dealing with you?

I actually have always found your police men over in the USA to be pretty nice.............mind you I sort of love that look of confusion on their faces with my driving license [TOTALLY legal I might add] but it appears that not many have seen that sort before............

If you treat people nicely then overall you get that sort of treatment back and like someone else said above me it MUST be a huge worry if they are going to get hurt just over a speeding ticket or a broken tail light, so that walk up to the car must be tense for them

It's because a lot of people don't like them, and disrespect them. But this is not how it should be. Their job is to protect us, and they are only trying to do their job. So respect them. You will find however you act twords them, they act twords you. :)
