The Bible is powerful because it is primitive. One must not take the Bible literally, especially if you want to become an expert. Start with a quality translation I like the NLV but also the Tanakh its the Jewish Scriptures which contain everything but in a different order and do not contain Christian scripture. Jewish publication society has many sources to assist students with studying the old testament. Start with the Psalms 92 and 23, it may renew your faith.

Yeah, so what. That's man's words.
God's words are simple and you didn't go after them
Don't kill
Don't wish you had something your neighbor has
Don't worship false gods and prophets or idols made of metal or stone
Don't screw around with someone else's spouse
You have a problem with any other words!
What about Jesus. One day there were actually doing those things you talked about, stoning a girl to death for screwing around outside of marraige. Jesus stopped them.
Ever see the last riot in Los Angeles. You think you could walk in and stop them stoning a reporter who was talking on the telphone.
How about love your neighbor like you love yourself
Love your enemy the most
When slapped don't get mad, turn the other cheek and let them have another shot at it.
I suppose someone slap you, you pull out a gun a whack em?
You got an enemy at school or work you hate them and wanna whack em
The book is a tool for guding you and you are supposed to figure out what is right and what is wrong.
That's what it's all about. MAN decided to play god, so GOD wants to see what man does in life.
God will decide on a case by case basis which man, if any, will be granted eternity based upon their legacy in life.
What you chose to do with your life is up to you.
You're reading in that book what people chose back then to do. If it sickens you then maybe the Good Book was Good for you.

You are correct, those things are in the Bible. And yes, it is "medieval". the reason for that is the time it was written. Thank the Lord that Noah didn't text message all the animals to come to the ark. Jesus was tortured and hung on a cross too. That was God's only son!! That was the sacrifice God made for every one alive today. the Bible indeed has violence and advice for Christians. I do read the Bible, and as someone else said, anything taken out of context is well- useless- and doesn't make sense.
You don't have to read the Bible if you choose not to, but I strongly recommend before you start spouting off about everything you think is so awful about it.
Jesus still loves you!!

The examples you give show that you haven't actually "read" the Bible--you simply pulled things here and there out of context and so have missed what it is really all about. I've read the Bible many times through--all the way and have studied it over the course of many years, and I can tell you that you have a very incomplete and warped view of what it has to say. The more I read and study the Bible, the more I trust in a loving, compassionate, wise, just and perfect Holy God.
It is not surprising, however, that you, like many others who claim to be "educated" people, choose not to believe something that you haven't even really tried to study or understand. In your limited understanding and with meager "research" you have decided to trust in your own great wisdom, believing you have "chosen the right path." I encourage you to put a little more effort into seeking out the truth--your eternal future depends on it.
God Bless.

"shudder". a) you are stereotyping and being judgemental about our entire group. b) I have read the Bible. the entire Bible, cover to cover, IN CONTEXT, which you obviously have not. In fact, I majored in Biblical Studies in college. Some parts of the Bible are hard to understand, or don't make sense when read out of context. If you learn more about the culture in which it was written, and the original language of the text, you might be able to better understand what God is trying to communicate. The only perfect person, for one thing, in the Bible, is Jesus. Everyone else are HUMANS, people who makes mistakes and suffer for it. they're there as examples for us of what not to do (like have tons of wives, for example). And the bad wording--did you try reading it in the original Greek and Hebrew? because otherwise you're just reading it how someone else has understood the original language and translated it. and if you read the King James translation, you read a 400 year old version of translation. Do you blame modern English speaking people for Shakespear's language when you read that?
On the other hand, I do give you kudos for trying to read the Bible. Many don't bother. I just wish you'd gone into with a more open mind, and more of a desire to understand what it is that thousands of years worth of people have believed in enough to follow it, even to the death.
I would be delighted to discuss this further with you, if you are interested in serious conversation, and not just hate-filled bashing.

Did you read the whole Bible?
It sounds like you may have missed the new testament where God sent his only Son Jesus to die for our sins and make the old laws of tradition and sacrifices void so we can come to God. Jesus gave his life so we can know God. When Jesus came he taught how to love and discussed what love really is.
The book of Hebrews explains that completely. The Book of John tells the story of how it all comes about.
Don't give up on the Bible it's TRUE whether you accept it now or are wishing you accepted it later. I recommend people to start reading in the New Testament first to understand who JESUS is....he's what matters. For the History and beginning of life information read through the Old Testament.

I am a very devoted Christian, and I have read the Bible, I think it is God's love letter to us, If you would read it without your preconceived notions maybe you would get something out of it. Try Psalm 91:1 Whoever goes to the Lord for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty can say to Him. You are my defender and protector You are my God; in you I trust.
Psalm 92: 1-5 How good it is to give thanks to you O Lord to sing in your honor O most High God to proclaim you constant love every morning and your faithfulness every night With the music of stringed instruments and with melody on the harp. Your mighty deeds O Lord make me glad; Because of what you have done I sing for joy.How great are your actions Lord! How deep are your thoughts! This is something a fool cannot know; someone who is stupid cannot understand

I have read the Scriptures, cover to cover, several times. I have written commentaries on books, memorized passages and even did some study into Greek and Hebrew.
It is interesting that those who are obtuse in Biblical studies seem to pull out the same verses to justify their ridicule of a book they do not understand. Why not pull out passages about God's love, mercy, forgiveness, long suffering and grace? Why not passages about Christ and His words?
It really helps if you understand the cultural and historical context of the passages, but I realize that would take some work and study.

And then there's the uber-fun part where god makes a bunch of people wander in the desert for forty years because Moses' hand slipped a little.

Women must also marry a man who rapes them. Parents must kill disobedient children and on and on and on.
If the bible is the "word of God," God is one sick puppy (homicidal psychopath).
God works in mysterious ways much like Jack the Ripper or any other serial killer and rapist.
Based on previous comments we should ignore Hitler's faults and focus on his achievements. Hitler gave us the Volkswagen, an economical family car, and the autobahn, which is the inspiration for all interstate highway systems.
If you overlook Hitler's faults, he was a great guy, much like the biblical God.
And, like the biblical God, you have to put his behavior in context. Germany was suffering from enormous poverty, much of it the result of the the debt incurred from WWI, and HItler saved millions from starvation. Taken in context, Hitler was a great guy if we use the bible apologist's claims about the psychopath they call God.
