I've resently been breaking out in shingles. This is my 2nd episode. I hear it gets worse as you get older. I'm only 36 and a little concerned. Could this be a sign of something else in my body going wrong? A patient at work said she had shingles and was later diagnosised with bone cancer.

Had it been there done that. Worst thing that ever happened to me. Only once though. It comes from chicken pox virus that you had in your system since youth. You can get it twice.

Once you get the chicken pox, the herpes zoster virus stays in your body for life. People who get a severe case of "pox" tend to not get shingles; however, people who had a mild case tend to get shingles when under too much stress. So this is a good time to look at your stressors, and see what needs to change.

There is no evidence that shingles and cancer are related. Yet, we now that stress, especially high levels over time, impair the immune system.

I suggest you make some positive changes in your life now to a) lower your stress, and b) build up your immune system. The latter can be accomplished through diet, exercise, drinking water, and using herbal tinctures (enchinachea, etc.). Hope this helps.

I have had shingles twice. No Cancer. I do have an autoimmune disorder (Not Aids) That would be acquired . I stay away from anyone with chicken pox as both time I had been exposed to it. I don't really know how many times you can get it , the first time I got it I was told once, joke was on me. There is a pill that you can take within 24 hours that help so it will not be as bad. So to all of you that find yourself with it even if it is on a weekend get help ASAP.

I would think that you should talk to your doctor about it. Even if the out breaks are not related to a more severe condition it is unusualto have multiple outbreaks of shingles at such a young age. Remember too that shingle outbreaks can be brought on by stress both physical and mental, so make sure to take care of yourself to prevent them.

Yes they typically do get a little bit more intense as you get older. Shingles are a type of herpes...such as chicken pox is a type of herpes.

As we get older our immune systems will eventually start to weaken. Our immune systems are at it's peak at about 20 years of age...from their it;s all down hill. Poor diet, stress, lack of sleep and alcohol/drugs will speed up the decline in our immune systems.

Not to ruin your day you might for safety's sake get an HIV test. Shingles can also be a secondary effect of HIV since HIV also weakens a person's imune system.

I have never heard of shingles causing bone cancer. The stress from having bone cancer might have caused her immune system to be weakened and allowed the condition to flair up.

Get the HIV test and dump the guy who cheated on you. Find someone nice in your life.

Good Luck

You may have an immune deficiency. There is probably something underlying causing your shingles outbreaks. Not to scare you, but I would get tested for HIV. Thirty six year olds with a healthy immune system do not get shingles. THERE IS DEFINATELY ANOTHER UNDERLYING DIAGNOSIS. No doubt about it. Get checked out and find out what it is. Shingles outbreaks only occur in immunodefiency.
