Can I have some words of wisdom for someone who is afraid to be happy? Or, more precisely, for someone who feels that the minute things start to go well, they have to screw it up?

How does someone change the way that they are thinking to stop this kind of thinking?

Check out the song "You would rather have the blues" by David Frishberg. It's a classic.

It's part of the self we create - we think it's a sinful thing and we make a negative image of god and/or the universe that we either consciously or unconciously use to support this concept. We all have an inner world of negativity and crappy thoughts about others and ourselves; the key is to question and challenge anything that tells us that we're sinners or unworthy. We ALL deserve infinite happiness and this is our natural state, if we let go of the self-judgement. There is nothing ANYONE can do to be 'unworthy' of happiness - no 'sin' they need to beat themselves up for, no need to punish ourselves for any sense of low self esteem, no need to think that the universe and/or god is going to take away our happiness because we don't deserve it. Just try to get the person to be aware of their thoughts and to question them ever so slightly each time. And that the dynamic he/she is engaging in is a VERY common one; and that it can be let go if they decide to.

It's an abandonment issue. People who were abandoned as a child need to ruin something when it starts to get really good, because they are afraid that it will be taken away and they can't stand the thought of losing something great.

im afraid to be happy. only because i feel like i dont deserve to be happy. and if i am happy, i sometimes feel like i have to suffer in some way to deserve it. then i feel better about being happy. i think im better off being miserable. then i can feel and know that im alive.
