Okay....so I got my license weeks ago...and I have a Ford Focus ('02)...now I'm president of my senior class and obviously I'm gonna need a car to get to work etc.,etc. etc.... Now I was completely ecstatic when I got my license because come on...it's a big thing to happen when you need a car to get everywhere in such a small town...Now the car is already insured but they refuse to put me on their insurance plan because "it would cost too much"...So how much should be added onto thier plan???? And do you think i should be able to drive???

Well... yes "they" refer to my parents... and I was never ON the plan to begin with so I never had to pay for something i never had. Responsibility isnt a problem either...and by the way I'm 17...

Rude or not, cowboy is right. You need to talk to your parents about this (and stop being sensitive and defensive, you asked a question in this forum, be ready for some bluntness!). You are obviously savvy enough to be elected president, so you must be somewhat persuasive!
The fact of the matter is, you can drive the car without being on their insurance as a driver, and you'd be considered an insured. However, the right thing to do is list you on the policy. If you have an accident in the car, the insurance will just add you as a driver once they find out. It's best to just get it done, add you, and then not worry about the insurance company calling out "fraud" or "no coverage" because you weren't listed (even though for the most part the way insurance works, you'd be covered because you live with them and you were driving with permission- hopefully). So do what the others have said, and have them check into adding you and what the rate will be. If you work, offer to pay the amt it is increasing. If they call to inquire about adding you, the company will probably add you because they know now that you're driving.
I fail to understand, as a parent myself, why parents wait until their kids get old enough to drive and then say "sorry" as if it's a complete surprise that you are now a licensed driver and their rates are going to skyrocket. Maybe it's not the first thing we thought of when we found out you were on the way and we had 9 months to prepare for that, but they sure had at least 16 years to get ready for the big change in their insurance. There have been several questions about this from kids and parents. I just don't get it.
But, you know, you have to do what they say. That's the way it works. All you can do is go to them with facts and a promise that you'll be as safe as possible in the car. As far as being able to drive goes, that's their call regardless of the insurance situation.

Do YOU own the Ford Focus? If so, you can buy your own insurance policy - you DON'T have to be 18 to buy a policy. It should cost you maybe $4,000 a year.
If your parents aren't listing you on their policy, you can't make them, you can only go buy your own. If they are going from 3 cars and 2 drivers to 3 cars and 3 drivers, you're probably costing them about $250 a month.
Do *I* think you should be able to drive? I'm the wrong person to ask. I have a 15 year old who wants to drive. We have been very careful to NOT discuss money issues in front of him, but we FLAT OUT can't afford the extra premium. He's going to have to get a job, and pay his own insurance - but we'll need to be sure he doesn't quit, so he needs to pay his share, six months in advance. It's not fair that his dad should work a second job, so he should be able to drive, if he's not working a first job.
So, if I were you . . .I'd get a part time job, and save the $$, and hand your parents 6 months premium, and THEN ask if they'll add you to the car. I'd guess $500 or $600 should cover it, if they only have two cars now, but it will be more like $1500 if the Ford is their third car.

Insurance will cost between 600 and 2000 every six months If you have taken a driver safety course and have good grades most insurance companies will discount the rate . Your parents can request a quote and you will know the exact cost . If your parents don't want you on there policy you can transfer vehicle to your name and obtain your own insurance policy however with your age lack of credit history and lack of driving experience
The insurance premium is going to be very high see what you can work out with your parents . If you have a job maybe you can pay the difference in cost

Parents obviously cannot be forced to add you as a driver on their policy, however, if you can pay the premium difference, which could be anywhere upwards of $150 a month depending on so many factors, you should be able to negotiate with them. When I got my licence and my first car, my dad paid for the difference to add the car, but I negotiated a way to cover it. I presume you are saying it is insured for the parents as drivers, now? If so, that is why you have to negotiate with them, otherwise, if you actually own the car, you are stuck with getting your own insurance.

Ask your folks to find out how much it will cost to add you to their policy and then pay them for it. It will cost you much less than getting your own policy will. When my son turned 16, the added cost for insurance on my policy was $900.00 a year. That was inn San Antonio a number of years ago.
You said your car was already insured. Did you get your own insurance? If your parents are insuring it and they have you listed as an unauthorized or prohibited driver, you can't drive it under any circumstances.

First off who are "THEY"? your parents? Don't know what your state requires but it should be cheaper for them if your on their plan. If "they" meaning your parents took you off the policy maybe they want you to have the responsibility to pay it on your own. Maybe if your re-spon-sib-le you could sit down with them and talk about contributing to your share of paying the insurance. if they put you back on their policy.

Personally, I think that 14 year olds should drive if they meet all the standards.
