can diet soda really cause cancer?

Any processed food we consume can and does cause cancer. Diet soda is worse than regular, which happens to be pretty horrific itself.

Drink water, water, water. It sucks at first, but after a few days you start to crave it.

No Diet Soda can not cause cancer per say BUT there are a few things you need to consider. One of the previous concerns was a synthetic sugar known as sacycharin(unsure of spelling) It was taken off the market in all forms years ago but has recently been allowed back. Why the backpeddling I am not sure. There have been studies on Aspertame which is what is used in most common diet drinks but as you have seen there is a new one on the market which is made from sugar thereby ... There are studies that will tell you all these products are fine and ones that will tell you they cause cancer. Most of the hype is just that but you need to evaluate it for your self as we all have different bodies, metabolisms and risk factors. Sorry if this is not the answer you are lookig for but the key to anything in life is balance and moderation. A little of something is better than binging out and regretting it the next day.

First of all, check out snopes.com and you'll see some of the urban legends surrounding diet drinks and specifically aspartame. According to mayoclinic.com, the FDA's "acceptable daily intake" for aspartame is 50mg per kg or about 15 cans of soda per day. These levels are intended to be "about 100 times less than the smallest amount that might cause health concerns." Some people with the genetic disease phenylketonuria cannot have aspartame, but you would know if you have that. Take any answers with a grain of salt and do some investigating yourself, just make sure the websites you check have actual facts and studies listed which can be verified.

I heard a news announcement on the radio a few days ago denouncing that. It is not true, thankfully. As far as being worse than sugar soda, that sure is debatable, sugar soda has a lot of empty calories, which really contribute to the ever-growing obesity epidemic, which will surely lead to other diseases as it's effect on the body progresses. I'm sure the best thing to do is abstain from any type of soda altogether, but that sure gets boring!!

saccharin has been found to cause cancer in rats.

the amount that would need to be consumed to be equivalent to what the rats ingested (if I remember correctly) is something like a bathtub full a day.

Saccharin is the first thing that comes to mind when I think "diet soda / cancer" but there are other factors as well. think of the calcium that is leached out of your bones from the phosphoric acid... you get the idea, not the healthiest choice. ;)

No, despite paranoid fears about this and extensive testing, there has never been any evidence of this. And I've been drinking a lot of it daily for 40 years and am perfectly healthy (yes, I had a check-up recently). My neighbor keeps telling me that diet soda is very fattening because of all the sugar. Even when I show him the fact that there is absolutely NO sugar and no calories in it, he is still convinced that it has some horrible level of sugar in it. Go figure!

Any soda with artificial sweetener is dangerous. Aspartame is made from bananas but the bonding agent is chemical and can cause blindness. Carbonation will cause an imbalance in the bladder causing infection. It doesn't do much better with your teeth or stomach. Pour some on the hood of your car and watch what it does to the paint.

There is no proven link between diet soda and cancer but for those of you who drink and eat only natural organic items that you grew yourself in a bubble *claps*

Not the soda itself, but the artificial sugar (saccharin) was found to cause cancer in lab rats, so...

hope this helps.
