It really depends on what you like to do.
Personally, I love landscape and still life. I do it every chance I get. I don't make a ton of money doing it, but I make some. Don't rule out photo journalism. I know a very good PJ and she has let me go with her on a couple of calls. If you are good, you will never stop working.
I have done forensic photography for years. It makes me lots of money, but the subject is often messy and there is absolutely NO creativity involved.
Fashion takes forever to break in to, and portrait can be difficult at times.
Take some time, explore your options and even contact some local pros and ask if you can "tag along" for a couple of jobs. Many will let you and it will give you a great view from the inside.

In terms of heirarchy photography can be broken up into four major categories with various subcategories enumerated below them: commercial, fine art, photo journalism, and scientific.
By far the most lucrative of the photographic field would be commercial photography. The various fields of commercial photography can be listed as such but not limited to: product, portrait, fashion, architectural etc. Indeed fashion photography is highly competitive, but other fields such as architerctural and product photography can be quite a worth while endeavor.
Unlike commercial photography which is a client based endeavor which follows in the spirit of other commercial art fields like graphic design, fine art as the name suggests is art. You produce it not with the general intent on pleasing a client but fulfilling a concept, a theory, emotion etc...However fine artists are on occasion contracted out like commercial photographers to work on a project. So there is indeed overlapping of fields and many fine art photographers work as commercial photographers/assistants to support their work.

fashion pays most, but very competitive and not easy to get in the business. scenery is ok but usually you sell your images to a company that sells the rights to other people for stuff like calendars, cards, books etc. portrait is ok if you like slow, studio work and weddings etc. not big business unless in small town. i'd work for a magazine and pick either sports or travel photog.

I do portrait. I would like to do nature and scenary. Sometimes people are too much to deal with. And you can only go through so many poses with portrait photography. But with nature/landscape/scenary... it's always different. Always exciting.

I prefer wildlife , abstracts , macro , and pictures of my family and friends , I am not big on portraits . For me it is a hobby and a way for me to be creative. It is purely for fun and enjoyment of all the things around me. You can take better pictures of people when they are doing something natural apposed to posing and saying cheese please!
