I reallylike to paint but I'm only good with the paint by numbers type. I have decided that I will be a master painter like the guy on TV with the afro. What do I have to do?

Bob Ross was the happy painter. His videos are still available. Practice, Practice, and take art classes. Study Anatomy. All these things will help.
Learn to see and not just look!

The guy on T.V. is not what I would call a master painter. It is a technique however. It is an an impressionistic form of painting. It is not realism. A realistic form is painting to make your subject look real. I have several suggestions: Learn the basics of drawing first. How to add shading and light areas. Practice mixing colors. Pick a color anywhere whither it be a piece of fruit or a color from a piece of material. See if you can match it. By the way if you buy certain colors(I use Pretested oils) you can mix any color you want. Heres the list. Burnt Umber,Burnt Sienna,Raw Umber,Yello Ochre,Alizarin Crimson,Thalo Green,Lemon Yellow,Lt. Orange,Cadnium Red,Cobalt Blueand of course titanium white, and a black I use Ivory Black. I learned this from a "master teacher" from China and that is all he uses. Then look at museum sites on the internet especially one's with a zoom and you will begin to learn about the REALmasters. The 18th and 19th centries were the best. The Detriot museum of art is a real good one. I would'nt just learn a technique because you will be dissapointed. I went that route too. You will have greater luck in understanding the basics of drawing and painting. Good Luck

If you really want to learn to paint, do NOT follow Misters Ross or Nagy, because their techniques will lead to a level of painting most artists would refer to as Kmart style. That may be satisfying enough, then OK. aspire...but to really enjoy all that painting offers, follow not TV but your heart. Take some classes at an art center, school or other ed facility. First get a tight ugly shirt, get a fro wig and some paints and canvases. You'll be painting like him in no time.
