Research studies have shown that food cravings aren’t all in your mind. In fact, your body craves food because it remembers the physiological effects the food had when consumed in the past.

Foods that we consider enjoyable activate the same reward pathways in the brain that are triggered by certain drugs! There are a number of things you can do to help your brain ward off food cravings when you smell or crave your favorite unhealthy foods that you are now trying to eat less or not at all.

Exercise: Any form of exercise, even in moderate amounts can help to de-stress and ward of anxiety. Research studies show that people who exercise have better control over their bodies and daily lives. And the good news is you don’t have to go workout and sweat for an hour to see the benefits of your exercise. Rather smaller bouts of exercise are just as effective and you are more likely to be consistent.

For instance if you feel a food craving coming on and you are doing so well on that diet that you just don’t want to give in but it feels so difficult turn to exercise instead. Do a few push ups on the counter or take a walk in the sunshine or do a few crunches. Distracting yourself from cravings will help you to feel good about yourself and your new eating habits.

Meditate: Meditation in any form has been known to induce a biological state of mind that is the exact opposite of that of stress. As the old saying goes “meditation is food for the soul.” Meditation satisfies the hunger that food alone can not fix. When your body is feeling good and satisfied you are less likely to overeat. Most people turn to food when they are stressed, anxious or frustrated with their family, work and lives.

Take it Easy: Don’t be overly strict with your weight loss efforts. Consistent yes, but you don’t have to be so hard on yourself that you are miserable and end up wanting to give up. You are human and it will take some adjusting to your new eating habits. Go with the flow and give in every now and again to your favorite unhealthy snack. In your overall outlook of life, just take it easy and learn to relax. When you are stressed it works against your weight loss efforts and it as these times that we often overeat or turn to food for comfort.

Meditation, exercise and relaxation are three nonfood alternatives that are not only healthy but studies show the effectiveness they have on our health. With these few modifications you are helping to curb your cravings while changing the underlying chemistry in your body that leads to food cravings.
