The second one is right since we don't use "my" with school grade levels. "My grade" would refer to the grade or score you got in a class. "My grade in English class was A+."

I like "When I was in the first grade.....". In my first grade would mean your first educational rating.

Which side of the Atlantic are you on? One is British, but they would probably say "first year." Two is American.

although the americans do know what they mean, I am sorry to say that they are not the same because it the first apply to the brithish way of thinking while the second way applies to the second way of thinking.
