This proverb now has two meanings: people pay a price for being always on the move, in that they have no roots in a specific place (the original meaning); or people who keep moving avoid picking up responsibilities and cares.

If a person never stays in one place, he or she never"gathers" or gets attached to things or people. Moss grows on stones which havebeen on the ground for manyyears, so a stone which rollscannot grow moss. The saying is " A rolling stone gathers no moss." It means if you keep moving and learning that you don't just sit there becoming a couch potato. It is true a rolling stone gathers no moss but only overtime. At the begging of the rock rolling then it will gather moss, but overtime it will lose all the moss it has gained

An example of " A rolling stone gathers no moss" would be people who move many times, and don't stay in one place for too long. They loose money, things and friendships through the moving process. Therefore, they gather less as they go along, instead of gaining.

Quite wrong, all of you.
The Story:
In my youth, I remember a gent called Mick Jagger, Rock & Roll artist. You may have heard of him. Mick was not always a rock & roller, infact his first choice in life s work was a moss gatherer. Gathering moss and stacking it in an central location. In the evenings Mick would practice music with his band. As time went by they performed gigs, then more & more until Mick had no time to gather moss and took on music as his career. Now comes the odd part, Mick never returned to his first choice of employment, (moss gatherer) not at all and still has not. Very strange! But wait, This tale has a moral to it:
You see; A Rolling Stone gathers no moss.

I think it means that if you keep on rolling in your life (like a rolling stone) then you won't collect all the stuff that keeps like mundane and boring (moss).
If you live your life the same way, day in and day out, without change or new experiences then you will "gather that moss".

A stone sitting in the woods can have lichens or moss grow over it after a while. If a rock is constantly moving, those plants don't have a chance to accumulate. It is a metaphor to describe someone who is constantly moving or busy.

It means that the people working hard constantly without waisting there time has no time to thing about others or to solve their problems .They them self are too busy with there own work that they hardly find time to care for others .
This quote also comment on those people who are unable to achieve stability in their life.Such people are indecisive while choosing there friends etc.Due to such indecisive nature they remain indifferent and hence they are unable to gather much fame.
