Parakeets don't make a nest like wild birds, they need a wood box and generally do not line it with anything.

I doubt your parakeet is actually eating the newspaper, rather he is likely just playing with it - in which case it is being shredded. You might try putting some wood toys in his cage to play with - or a rope he can have fun unraveling. Most pet shops that sell birds will carry these items.

it extremely is rather commonplace. I even have 9 parakeets and as quickly as i adjust the paper of their cage, they bypass to shred it. The ink won't kill them, even though it continues to be no longer secure for them to consume. even inspite of the incontrovertible fact that newspaper is the wonderful cage liner there is- (much less scent, good) Please, do no longer purchase the wood shavings or corn cob bedding for the backside of the cage. They incorporate too lots airborne dirt and mud that the birds can inhale, and that they could get respiration infections. Sanded paper isn't sturdy the two, the grits can stay of their bodies for a protracted time. Birds purely prefer sanded paper in the event that they don't have a cuttlebone or are no longer getting fed good. Paper towel could be your superb wager, in case you do no longer prefer to apply newspaper. perhaps some relaxing new toys could seize their pastime. sturdy success!

That it perfectly normal pet bird behavior.
They will shred it and toss it around; he is just playing.

I give my bird crumpled up pieces of newspaper sometimes and they have tons of fun with it.

Please make sure that it is black and white newspaper only, some of the color dyes used on front pages and advertisements etc can be bad for them.

Enjoy your bird!

They're not eating paper, just shredding it up to make a nest. Yes, it is very normal. What I did with my cockatiel was cut the paper shorter, then she did not have a tent to play with, and a mess for me to clean up

Be extremely careful about toys that unravel. My poor little parakeet unraveled the thread on one of those toys and somehow got caught in it and hanged to death. The thread didn't unravel all the way open and her little head got stuck in the opening. It was horrible and heartbreaking.

Yes it is normal. He's not trying to make a nest, just entertaining himself/herself.
