Taxonomists--biologists who specialize in identifying and classifying life on the planet--have named approximately 1.7 million species so far. Each year, about 13,000 more species are added to the list of known organisms.

Roughly two million. It is impossible to obtain an
accurate count, for various reasons. As to the
number that actually exist, known or not, estimates
run from about 4-30 million. The 30 million figure
is possibly too large, but how could we know. In
just one group, spiders, in a year I checked on,
650 new species were discovered and named.
