Depression hits all people whether their situation is good or not. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain. You don't have to have something on the outside causing the depression. It's normal for teenagers to feel scared about their futures as this is the time you are supposed to decide what you want to be and you may not know yet what you want to do. You could talk to a counselor at school or to your family doctor. There are tests you can take to determine if you do suffer from depression. Medication can help make a great difference. I know I have had depression for years and it started in my early teens. I became agoraphobic. (afraid of leaving the house) It's no way to live so I hope you get some help. There is no longer the stigma of having a mental illness. Get help and start enjoying life again !!!

You know I went through this shortly after graduation. You feel terrible but nothing is wrong in your life. I went to my doctor about it finally after months of dealing with it. He ran some tests and I had a major chemical imbalance, I got on a prescription medicine and vitamin shots and all that emptiness went away. Try talking to your doctor about it especially if you don't tell your parents, you are old enough to go to the doctor on your own and determine the problem before revealing it to anyone else. By law your doctor will also keep it confidential. This is the best time of your life right now so make sure you fix this so you can get back to being an awesome SENIOR!! Before you know it you'll be having your 10 year reunion like I'm about to.

God bless that you came on here for help.
Please ask your mom or dad if they or any other their family members ever suffered depression. They should tell you.
Yes, it is abnormal, and many people suffer from it. I suggest going into counseling, and getting medication. Be careful the meds will take at least 6 weeks to work, so have a family member be there for you when you want to talk and a counselor when you have appointments.
If you suffer this everyday day in and out, and it NEVER goes away it is serious depression, and DON"T leave it alone. It can and will kill you. I had a friend that started feeling lightheaded and had 2 nervous breakdowns, and she said if she didn't take medication the depression would kill her. Don't be scared.
God bless you always and hope u are better.

You may have a phobia. One of the most likely
is agoraphobia (going out of the house, for fear you will fall down and they will call ambulance and you will be embarrassed) the best way to overcome a phobia is to confront your fear and go out with a trusted friend who will not reveal your inner secrets. Whatever problem you have, it is likely to pass as you get older and you mature. If you do fear that you will pass out (have a panic attack), you want to do it on your own turf, in your own bedroom where you are safe and can lie down. you may need to see a doctor and get some mild low dose anti-anxiety pills. Tell your doctor what's going on and let him make the call. If you are just depressed, why not volunteer a few hours at a children's' hospital or a veteran's hospital. Your
self-esteem will shoot up immensely once you find out how much you can help. they never ever
stop saying thank you for every little thing that you do. I hope this has been of some help!
Seventeen is not the time to give up- it's just the time to start doing something wonderful with your life. You have much to look forward to.

I know how you feel, and I know you've heard this line before, but most people feel like that at one point or another. Most sources will tell you to talk to a doctor, a counselor, or some other adult you trust. But I also know that I wouldn't talk to any of those people if I was in your situation, I doubt I'd even talk to my close friends. But I do know that these kinds of feelings can lead to very destructive and dangerous behaviour. Please realize that hurting yourself (taking un-necessary medications, cutting, or starving yourself) will not solve any problems. Whatever is bugging you, realize it has no power over you. As far as a solution to your general depression, give your life a meaningful purpose. I know this may sound crazy, but give yourself an ultimate goal. It could be to devote all of your free time to getting into college, join a futbol (soccer) team, learn another language, get involved more in your church, or join the military. I know this sounds somewhat crazy, but think of something that will give your life true meaning (not that is dosn't already, don't EVER think you life is pointless). Hope this helps!

first of all, what u see on tv...just completely ignore it...tv likes to make things look really pretty when they arent...(sometimes they are accurate but mostly not) anyways...normal feelings...i fear death and i do see ur point on what exactly is the point of living...you know, u work, then die...basically...hopefully between that time u do enjoy yourself...i guess thats the goal of life, enjoy every moment u can! maybe ur depressed b/c of life after high school, maybe, but u cant worry about that. you need to keep a positive attitude, go to college if that is what u want (there are so many things u can do there, the possibilities are limitless) just set goals and go for them...and again you might think whats the point, right? were gonna die....well, yeah....what can i say...but u cant thing so much about that or u will have a nervous breakdown...i know, ive had a few of those lately thinking about those things...my parents just got a divorce and im living in the attic of my aunts house w/ two cousins (both girls) im telling you, things couldnt get any worse...lol...my dad is in PA and my mom in PR getting her nursing license...so im in NJ alone w/ my aunt...well, this isnt about me...but u know what works for me...lol, sry...if you need to cry, dude, just let it all out...it doesnt have to be in front of anyone, it can be in your room at night...for me, crying relieves so much stress...i just cry, think positive things and all the stuff i want to happen in the future...and im telling u it works...and it isnt a sign of weakness...everyone cries...but do what feels good for you.
by the way, im also 17, and i also get good grades...oh yeah...lol...and im going thru a lot of sh!t right now...things i thought would be happening. but thru it all, i have kept a positive attitude and ive been handling it ok...

You're not happy. Even if you're life seems great, its obviously not, you're missing something. I know how you feel, (16) sometimes I feel like that, I have a wonderful family, great friends..but I sometimes feel really, depressed. Then I think about what I want out of my life, the future. I want to travel all over, and fall in love , have kids, become an artist and write a book. You see? You need to think about what makes you happy, and what you want from life! Whatever you do don't give up on yourself. Just remember everything happens for a reason, and even if you do feel down, don't just sit there and sulk, do something about it, figure out why and fix it, you can fix it, but you have to want to in order too.

You can still suffer from depression even if everything around you seems fine. If you want, you could see a doctor, but I personally stay away from the whole prescription medication thing.
Getting proper sleep, eating healthy non-processed food, and getting at least an hour of exercise per day stabilizes the chemicals in your brain.
Give it a try. Also, don't forget that as a teeanger, you do have alot of chemical goings-on in your body. It could just be normal hormones.
I wish you the best.

Hello, I'm 17, too. Maybe you are thinking about everything too much. . .Now, don't get depressed because of those "scripted" families. You have your own, and you yourself said you are fine with your life (great high school, lots of friends, you have everything going for you.) Maybe you are not enjoyinh anything because you think you are depressed. When you feel this way, maybe try thinking "Why do I feel this way? Why aren't I happy being with my friends?" That might help. Now, if things really start to get serious, I suggest talking to your parents and then discussing a plan of action to get you out of it. Good luck!
