My sister-inlaw caught her daughter stealing, she called up her local police department and told them the situation and surprisingly they let her take my niece in to the station and a cop talked to her about what would happen if she got caught doing it again , I have not heard about her stealing anything since then and that was about four years ago

Don't take this the wrong way, but you need some hardcore discipline for this one. If he/she is already stealing at 9, it will only get worse. I hope you embarrassed the crap out of him/her by taking the product back...making him explain why he did and apologize for it. Some kids do it for the rush of getting away with it. Trust me...it will only get worse if you don't do everything in your power to stop it now. Don't let him wander around the store or be anywhere alone in a store...stuff like that really makes kids mad. Also, question everything new you find around the house. Ask where it came from. I can't stress enough...I never got caught when I was a kid...but I was lucky.

trust me with this please:
ask him/ her for a talk in private, YOU HAVE TO SHOW HIM HOW SERIOUS you are, close the door, sit NEXT to him, and be silent for sometime.. and then say
i know you ARE stealing, i don't want you to do it again ever.
- use exact phrase-
he will NEVER do it again.
i promise you

From experence , I say not only punish her by making her work to earn the money to pay back , tell her that if it happens you will have her arrested .

Make him take it back and apologize for taking it. Talk to him about unacceptable behavior. If he does it again take him to the police station and ask them to talk to him.
