There are different stages in the sleep cycle starting from a relaxed state to deep sleep. The deepest level is REM (Rapid eye movement). This is where dreaming occurs. A person may be hard to wake and look like their eyes are slightly open.

Also, a person will go through the stages of sleep up to four times a night and usually only remember the last dream that they had. The cycle lasts around 90 mins.
